The Winnipeg Jets are now nine games into their 2026-27 NHL regular season following a Tuesday night away game against the St. Louis Blues. The Jets are now exactly 5 days away from hosting the Montreal Canadiens at Princess Auto Stadium for the 2026 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic. The preparations and updates to Princess Auto Stadium are almost complete, but before the outdoor game the Jets are focused on their mini two game Central Division road trip. The Jets fell to 4-2-2 on the season after a 3-2 loss to the Hurricanes on Saturday, marking the Jets 3rd loss of their new season by one goal.
Before looking back at tonight’s game against the Blues, we need to quickly rewind back to the Jets home game on the weekend against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. The Hurricanes entered Canada Life Centre on Saturday with a six game winning streak. Clay Stevenson got the start in goal, and overall it was his best (and busiest) game as a Jet so far.
The 1st period went without a goal, before Mark Scheifele scored his 2nd goal of the season early into the 2nd period. Mark Jankowski, who’s had a strong start to the season on the Hurricanes bottom six, evened the game at one with a powerplay goal four minutes after Scheifele opened the scoring. Alex Iafallo gave the Jets another lead less than three minutes after Alex Lowry set him up for a tap in goal following a mis-read play by Pyotr Kochetkov near the goal.
The Jets couldn’t take the lead into the 3rd period though, as Jesperi Kotkaniemi notched his first goal of the season late in the 2nd. The 3rd period saw just one goal, and it came from former Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers. Shayne Gostisbehere set up Ehlers for the go-ahead powerplay goal with 13 minutes remaining, and that would be the final goal of the game. The Jets had a decent final push in the final minutes, but the Hurricanes held on while outshooting the Jets 37-23.
Tonight’s game in St. Louis saw Stuart Skinner and Joel Hofer between the pipes. Shots on goal in the first period were 14-13 for the Jets, and just one of those shots (for St. Louis) went in the net. Jimmy Snuggerud re-directed a pass in the slot past Skinner for his 5th goal of the season. Only one powerplay was given in the first period (to the Blues), but the Jets defended well to keep this game at 1-0 after the opening twenty minutes.
The next twenty minutes saw the two teams trade powerplay opportunities. The Jets took three penalties and the Blues took two penalties, but neither team was able to get on the board in the second period. Shots on goal in the second period were just 9-7 for the Jets, who continued to push for the equalizer going into yet another close game.
Cole Perfetti got the Jets on the board just 32 seconds into the final frame after a nice play that was set up by Neal Pionk and Gabriel Vilardi. That goal gave the Jets some much needed momentum, but eight minutes later the Blues re-took the lead. After a few powerplay chances for each team, Philip Broberg scored his 2nd goal of the season with a slap shot from the point. A few minutes later the Jets got another powerplay chance to tie this game, but the scored remained 2-1 late into the 3rd.
Once again the Jets found themselves in a one goal game in the final minutes (sometimes it’s been with the lead, sometimes it’s been trailing), and despite some chances the score remained as it was. The Jets lost their fifth game of the season, and for the fourth time it was by just one goal. Final score 2-1 for the Blues, and the Jets led in shots on goal 33-29. The Jets will travel to Dallas later this evening to face the Stars on Thursday night.
