The Winnipeg Jets entered tonight’s game against the San Jose Sharks on a 9 game win streak. Having won 8 in a row prior to the 4 Nations Face-Off break, the team was looking to pick up where they left off, as they look to regain top spot in the NHL league standings. Saturday night’s game saw the Jets defeat the Blues 4-3 by way of a shootout. Gabriel Vilardi led the Jets with 2 goals on the night, and Kyle Connor, despite have a whopping 10 shots on goal, was not able to find the back of the net until the shootout, where he scored the winning goal. Tonight, the Jets were going for their 10th straight victory in front of fans at Canada Life Centre.
1st Period
The game, available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video’s “Monday Night Hockey”, was one of only two games on the NHL schedule. It was a slow start for both teams, who generated some shots on goal, but not many scoring threats on Connor Hellebuyck and Vitek Vanecek. Nikolaj Ehlers and Jack Thompson took roughing penalties (against different players oddly enough) at 13:13 into the 1st. Just over a minute later, Adam Lowry got called for interference for getting too up and personal with Sharks goalkeeper Vitek Vanecek. The Sharks opened the scoring on the powerplay. Will Smith and Macklin Celebrini set up William Eklund for a slap shot from the right faceoff dot that snuck by Hellebuyck. The Jets had some push back in them after this goal but were unable to tie up the game in the 1st, and shots on goal after the opening period were 10-6 Jets.
2nd Period
The 2nd period opened similarly to the 1st, with both teams taking a bit of a patient approach. Dylan DeMelo took a tripping call against Mario Ferraro, and the Sharks went on their 2nd powerplay of the game. The Jets shut down the Sharks this time, and teams traded chances through the 1st half of the 2nd. Kyle Connor tripped Marc-Edouard Vlasic, giving the Sharks a 3rd powerplay. Yet again the Jets penalty killers came up clutch, not allowing the sharks to extend their lead. With 3 minutes left to play in the 2nd the Jets got their 1st powerplay of the night. Vanecek played great throughout this game for the Sharks, and that wasn’t any different on this powerplay. The Jets led again in shots in the 2nd, 10-8, but still found themselves down 1-0.
3rd Period
The Jets wanted to get something going early in the 3rd, and they got that chance when Celebrini took a holding call against Dylan DeMelo. This powerplay went a little better than the 1st Jets powerplay (late in the 2nd), but the Jets still couldn’t put one past Vanecek. Having played last night, you could tell that the Sharks were the more tired team in the 3rd, and the Jets used that to their advantage. Shots on goal were 13-3 for the Jets in the 3rd, and it wasn’t until one of their last shots of the game that they would tie it up at 1. With the net empty, the Jets entered the zone. After a shot on goal, a failed clearing attempt went back to Josh Morrissey, who slapped one past Vanecek’s left shoulder with only 26 seconds to play. Overtime was needed on this Monday night.
Overtime
Right from puck drop, the Jets did well in overtime being the team in possession of the puck. After some good puck cycling in the offensive zone, Ehlers, who just jumped on the ice, received a pass from Connor and shot the puck on net. Mark Scheifele anticipated a rebound, and snuck behind the Sharks defence, sliding the puck on the backhand past Vanecek for the game winning goal 1:33 into overtime. Final shots on goal were 35-18 for the Jets. Mark Scheifele’s goal was his 329th career goal with the Jets, setting a new franchise record for most goals in Jets (2.0) history. The Jets have now won 10 straight games, and have regained a 1 point lead over the Capitals (with 1 more game played) for 1st in the NHL’s league standings.
Final Thoughts
The Jets were the better team tonight, and deservingly were rewarded with a win. It took a while to get the quality chances going, but Vanecek stood tall in net for the Sharks, earning the 1st star of the game on NHL.com. Morrissey and Scheifele helped the Jets complete their impressive 19th comeback win of the season, tied 1st in the NHL. Scheifele continues to be on pace for his career-best season, and now finds himself 3rd in the league in goals with 32. It was an all-around exciting night for Jets fans, who picked up the win under the broadcast spotlight on Amazon Prime Video’s Monday Night Hockey. Next up for the Jets is a mini 2 game road trip, beginning on Wednesday night at 6 pm CT in Ottawa against the Senators.
In case you missed it, here’s Scheifele’s record setting and overtime winning goal!
