The Winnipeg Jets franchise record 11 game win streak was ended last night after a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators. Following back to back losses (to the Flames and Utah) in mid-January, the Jets began a tremendous stretch of games where they kept finding ways to win games. This win streak reminded me of the Jets historic start to the season, where they just seemed to have the right mix of scoring, defending and goaltending. Here’s a quick recap of the 11 game win streak, and a little look ahead at the upcoming schedule for the Jets, with the trade deadline approaching in just one week.
January 22nd was when the month plus long streak of winning games began. The Jets faced a tough challenge on the road in Colorado, but a rising slap shot from Neal Pionk gave the Jets the 3-2 win in overtime. 2 days later, back at home in Winnipeg, the Jets reversed the score they lost to Utah (in Utah), winning 5-2. A big 3rd period led the Jets to victory, and Cole Perfetti scored a hat trick. 2 nights later, still in Winnipeg, the Jets beat the Flames 5-2 to get the win streak up to 3 games. Gabriel Vilardi was the Jets MVP of this night, scoring twice and adding 2 assists for a 4 point night.
After a night off, the Jets began a 3 game road trip, starting in Montreal. Kyle Connor scored twice, Hellebuyck played great, and the Jets won 4-1. The Jets soon improved the win streak to 5, winning 6-2 in Boston thanks to 2 goals from Scheifele and another solid showing from the whole team. February 1st was a clash between the two top teams in the NHL standings, with the Jets playing in Washington against the Capitals. This game was a real test for the Jets, but Josh Morrissey scored twice, including the game winner in overtime, increasing the win streak to 6 with a 5-4 OT win.
Eric Comrie was the star of the Jets next game against the Hurricanes. A 3-0 win in Winnipeg was Comrie’s best performance of the season, making 29 saves. February 7th the Jets played the Islanders in Winnipeg. This was the 1st Jets game I watched live at Canada Life Centre (I travelled from Vancouver), and despite a late 2 goal push from the Islanders, the Jets held on to win 4-3. The Jets entered the 4 Nations Face-Off break at the top of the NHL standings and on an 8 game win streak.
I wasn’t sure how the Jets would play after this 2 week break, but the team picked up where they left off, not wanting to lose this win streak. Gabriel Vilardi scored twice before the Jets narrowly beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in the shootout. Kyle Connor had 10 shots on goal this game, but only managed 1 assist before getting the winning shootout goal. Going for win number 10 in a row on Monday, the Jets started slow against the last place San Jose Sharks. After finally tying the game in the final minute, Mark Scheifele scored his Jets 2.0 franchise record 329th career goal to win it 2-1 in overtime. Wednesday night, the Jets made it 11 straight wins with another all-around team performance, defeating the Senators on the road 4-1.
Facing the Predators last night on a back to back, the Jets offence and powerplay came up short, as the 11 game win streak ended with a close 2-1 defeat. The Jets will now play 3 games before the NHL trade deadline, the Flyers (in Winnipeg), the Islanders (in New York) and the Flyers again (in Philadelphia). The Jets also play on deadline day in New Jersey, and it’ll be interesting to see what the lineup looks like on that night if any significant moves are made. The rest of the Jets schedule in March includes several games against Eastern conference opponents, followed by a mix of games against mostly Pacific division opponents. April will only feature Western conference opponents for the Jets, and several Central division matchups will be near the end of the season, with potential playoff implications on the line.
There’s lots to like about this 11 game win streak for the Jets, and now they’ll look to flip the page after a close loss and begin a new win streak on Saturday. Puck drop is a 6 pm CT at Canada Life Centre, and make sure to check back here for pre and post game articles.
