Winnipeg Jets star defenceman Josh Morrissey has been named the NHLPA’s Player of the Week (Oct. 24-30) after an outstanding stretch offensively.
Morrissey, 30, led all defencemen in scoring with eight points and recorded three multi-point outings as part of a four-game point streak.
After being held scoreless through the first several games of the season, Morrissey broke through Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks. His slap shot from the point rang off the post, bounced off goaltender Spencer Knight’s leg, and into the net to make it 5-1 in an eventual 6-3 Jets win.
The Calgary native now has a goal and nine assists this season, with seven of those assists coming during his recent surge. Through 11 games, Morrissey has added 18 shots on goal, 23 blocked shots, and boasts a plus-11 rating, per NHL Stats.
“I just tried to make a good, quick shot, and I kind of faded away after, I guess, like a Kobe shot,” Morrissey joked about his first goal of the season. “I didn’t see it. I just heard it. And then I heard the fans, and it went in. So it was nice to get one there.”
Morrissey and his partner Dylan DeMelo have been outstanding to start the season. The duo has combined for 17 points so far, stepping up in key moments for an injury-riddled Jets lineup.
Drafted 13th overall by Winnipeg in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Morrissey has long been a key piece of the Jets’ blue line and continues to prove why he’s one of the league’s most underrated defencemen.
Winnipeg is back in action Saturday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins at 2:00 p.m. CDT at Canada Life Centre. You can watch on TSN3.
