The Winnipeg Jets held practice this morning at Canada Life Centre following their 4-3 overtime loss to the Minnesota Wild last night, as they prepare to wrap up their two-game homestead against the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow evening.
Star defenceman Josh Morrissey was absent from the skate, with Haydn Fleury filling in alongside Dylan DeMelo on the top pairing. While it was initially assumed Morrissey was taking a maintenance day, that was not the case.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel told media following practice that the 30-year-old defenceman is considered day-to-day after taking a hit from behind by Wild forward Joel Eriksson Ek in last night’s game. Arniel voiced his frustration postgame over the non-call on the play, as well as Dylan DeMelo’s retaliation penalty shortly after.
“That’s an absolutely terrible non-call on Josh Morrissey. Absolutely terrible. It should have been called, head-first into the boards. And then a ticky-tacky call after that.”
DeMelo also addressed his penalty following today’s skate.
“I don’t think I should put myself in that position, so I’ll take ownership for my actions in that regard.”
Through 36 games this season, Morrissey has recorded six goals and 24 assists for 30 points, along with 12 penalty minutes and a plus-nine rating.
If the Jets’ top defenceman is unable to suit up against Edmonton, either Fleury or Dylan Samberg would step into the top pairing alongside DeMelo. For now, Morrissey’s status remains one to monitor ahead of tomorrow’s matchup.
