If you’re planning to catch a Winnipeg Jets preseason game at Canada Life Centre, Tuesday’s matchup against the Edmonton Oilers is the one to see. Jonathan Toews is expected to make his Jets preseason debut, skating alongside linemates Cole Perfetti and Gustav Nyquist.
Head coach Scott Arniel confirmed on Friday that the trio would sit out the opener against the Minnesota Wild but will suit up Tuesday.
From the first few days of camp, Toews has looked sharp. His hockey sense and IQ are still evident, and he still has the hands to make plays with the puck. The key question will be his speed, can he keep up with today’s NHL pace? That’s exactly what we’ll be watching for on Tuesday.
The Jets dropped their preseason opener 3–2 in overtime to Minnesota on Sunday night. Winnipeg jumped out to a 2–0 lead in the first period on goals from Morgan Barron and Danny Zhilkin. The Wild answered back, with Yakov Trenin cutting the deficit in half in the second, Hunter Haight tying it late in the third, and Trenin burying his second of the night in overtime to complete the comeback.
“I think the Zhilkin line, all three of those guys were real good,” Arniel said postgame. “I thought He and Fagemo, I thought those guys all played really well. For me, the game was we were really good in the first half, and they were a lot better in the second half.”
The Jets are off Monday before camp resumes Tuesday with the Morning Skate at 10 a.m. CDT, a non-game group practice at noon, and puck drop against the Oilers at 7 p.m. live on TSN3.
First-round training camp cuts haven’t been announced yet but are expected soon, likely after Tuesday’s game or later this week, before Winnipeg heads to Alberta for a Friday matchup against the Oilers (Sept. 26 at 8 p.m.) and then returns home to face Calgary on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.
