JNGD.S8.G69 Flight Plan: Kane Not Around as Sharks Visit Winnipeg

The Jets are back home after their four game road trip to the east coast. Even though they get a three game homestand, it comes against some of the toughest competition in the league. The Jets are taking on the Sharks tonight followed by the Bruins on Thursday and the Flames on Saturday. Evander Kane is always a story when he comes to visit, but he won’t be seen anywhere as he isn’t making the road trip with the team. The official word is that he’s missing games due to personal reasons as he’s sat out for the past two weeks. The Sharks are without Karlsson and Kane and the Jets are without Byfuglien and Morrissey, yet both teams are in the hunt for division titles. It’s going to be a good battle regardless of who’s on the ice tonight.

Sharks Player To Watch
#8 Joe Pavelski – C
There’s no denying that Joe Pavelski has had a great career in the NHL. With nearly 1000 games played and over 700 points, he’s been a consistent scorer for over the past decade. When looking at the teams he performs best against, the Jets rank near the top of the list. Over his career, Pavelski has scored more than a point per game against only three teams, the Maple Leafs, the Golden Knights, and the Winnipeg Jets. In the last meeting between these two clubs on February 5, Pavelski had a goal and an assist, including the game winner in overtime.
Last Sharks Game
It was a very good road game for the Sharks as they only allowed 24 shots in a 3-0 victory. Goodrow opened the scoring in the second period before Hertl and Couture added the insurance markers in the third. Couture’s goal came from a penalty shot in an odd sequence that saw the play go under review for off-side. It turns out that it didn’t matter if Couture was off-side because he didn’t score directly on the play as he got hooked and a penalty shot was called. That means the referees couldn’t disallow the goal even if Couture was offside.

Jets Player To Watch
#26 Blake Wheeler – RW
Wheeler has been on an absolute tear as of late as he scored seven goals in a four game span. However, he was held without a point in the last game against the Capitals on Sunday night. Knowing Wheeler’s competitive spirit, he’s likely to get back to the points column in timely fashion. Look for Wheeler to have another solid outing as the top line has been on their game lately.
Last Jets Game
The Jets powerplay was all kinds of disjointed as they went 0-5 with the man-advantage. This included a lengthy 5 on 3 as well as a powerplay in the closing minutes with Hellebuyck out of the net. In the end, the Jets weren’t able to muster more than a goal as the Capitals took this one by a score of 2-1.
Jets Notes
- It seems that the lineup, at least among forwards, is virtually set for the rest of the season. The current groupings give the Jets four solid lines each with their own unique strength. Being able to roll all four lines is really important down the stretch as it gives the high end players a bit more time to rest for the playoffs.
- Speaking of resting up, Paul Maurice is doing a much better job of managing Scheifele and Wheeler’s minutes as of late. Both players are averaging over 21 minutes per game this season but they have been under the 20 minute mark in four of the last five games. I would argue that Scheifele and Wheeler perform better when given less ice-time during the game.
