The Jets are beginning a three game road trip as they faceoff against the Avalanche for the second time in the past week. The Avs got the better of Winnipeg last Thursday as they ran away with a 4-1 victory. In the season series, the Jets are 2-1 as they previously beat Colorado 7-4 on January 8 and 5-2 on November 11. The Jets will be without Big Buff for this road trip as he went down against the Avs during their last meeting with a lower body injury. Maurice mentioned that Byfuglien will miss the next three games, and will be re-evaluated after that. With Byfuglien out, it appears that Niku will get an extended look alongside Ben Chiarot.

Avalanche Player To Watch

#1 Semyon Varlamov – Goalie

Even though goalies aren’t necessarily the most exciting players to watch, Varlamov is coming in as the hottest player on the Avs. He posted a 40 save shutout last game against the Golden Knights and he soundly beat the Jets last Thursday when he only allowed one goal on 25 shots. The key to this game is being able to solve Varlamov who’s been streaky throughout the season, but has been great over the past week.

Last Avalanche Game

As mentioned above, Varlamov stole the show as he stopped everything Vegas threw at him. Tyson Jost scored the game winning goal just minutes into the game as he pounced on a bad turnover in front of the Vegas net. The Avs added another goal in the second period before scoring another in the third en route to a 3-0 victory.

Jets Player To Watch

#13 Brandon Tanev – LW

Tanev has been on a tear as of late with goals in back to back games. This started last week against the Avalanche as he was the only Jets player who managed to score. He kept the momentum going into the next game as he scored another goal, this time shorthanded, as he made a nice move on a breakaway to beat Nilsson. He also added a shorthanded assist a few moments later as he fed Tyler Myers in the slot. It was a great game for Tanev who has already shattered his previous career highs in goals, assists, and points. Now with two straight games with a goal, Tanev will be the one to look out for as the Jets take on the Avalanche again.

Last Jets Game

This game got off to a wild start as Dmitry Kulikov took six minutes of penalties in the first seven minutes of the game. The Sens managed to score on the powerplay before Tanev answered with a shorthanded goal moments later. Shortly after that, Tanev found Myers in the slot for the second shorthanded goal of the game. Things went downhill from there as the Jets had to come from behind late in the third to tie things at three. While the Jets are usually dominant in overtime, it was the Sens who managed to score the game winner.

Jets Notes

  • Byfuglien will be out for ‘at least three games‘ after injuring his lower body last week against the Avalanche. It’s apparently not related to his previous injury, which is a good thing, but it’s still concerning given the fact that he’s been out for most of the past couple months.
  • The Jets recently wrapped up their eSports tournament over the long weekend. It was a fun event that saw one gamer come away with $4,500, on his 18th birthday. Not a bad way to ring in adulthood, eh?
  • The Jets are beginning a three game road trip as they head into Denver. They play the Avs, followed by the Golden Knights on Friday and the Coyotes on Sunday.
