JN Flight Plan: Stars Align in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Jets continue their four game homestand this afternoon as the Stars come to town. It’s been an interesting schedule for Winnipeg as they’ve only played two inter-division games all season. Those came against the Wild and the Blackhawks last month. The Central division test is coming in the next two week however, as the Jets face the Stars and the Avs this week before heading into Nashville and Dallas next week.

Last Stars Game

It didn’t take long for Dallas to get on the board as they scored 19 seconds into the game after creating a turnover in the Avalanche end. They never looked back as they doubled their lead later in the first and cruised to a 4-1 victory.

Fun Stars Fact…

The best players for Dallas all love to play against Winnipeg as all three of Seguin, Benn, and Radulov have posted over a point per game against Winnipeg throughout their careers. Seguin’s scored 42 points in 36 games, Radulov has 14 points in 12 games and Benn has 31 points in 30 games.

What They’re Saying…

Starting on Sunday with the Winnipeg Jets, the Stars need to adjust to life without John Klingberg, and what that means for zone exits, possession, and the power play. Klingberg, admittedly, has not been off to a great start to the year, but his improved play has coincided with the current Stars’ winning streak.

Last Jets Game

It was an all around effort for the club as Hellebuyck played great, the defense was serviceable, and the offense found the back of the net. Despite allowing the Canucks to score first, the Jets responeded with three straight goals before adding the empty netter in garbage time.

Fun Jets Facts…

  • We mentioned above that the best players in Dallas love to play against Winnipeg. However, the Jets have a similar trick of their sleeve in regards to Patrik Laine. Over the course of his 3+ seasons in the NHL, Laine has scored more goals (15) and points (20) against Dallas than any other team. In terms of goals per game, Dallas is one of three teams where Laine is averaging over a goal per game in his career. Florida and St. Louis are the others.

What We’re Saying…

“The main takeaway from the two powerplays is that the Jets are moving the puck much quicker around the zone. The old powerplay was extremely stagnant with the puck often sitting on Wheeler’s stick for far too long. The new powerplay seems to move the puck a lot quicker and utilizes all five players much better. We will have to wait and see if both units continue to play at a high level.”
