The Winnipeg Jets dropped their final game of their season long eight-game homestand to the Calgary Flames (Dustin Wolf) 3-1.
1st Period
Matt Coronato opened the scoring for the Flames at 13:32 to make it 1-0. Coronato didn’t even wait a split second to settle the puck down and he blistered a shot bar down on Eric Comrie to earn his 11th of the season.
The Flames turned over the puck multiple times in the opening frame, giving the Jets several chances to tie the game. However, Dustin Wolf was in the right position all night long.
At the end of 20 minutes, Calgary led 1-0, despite being outshot 12-6 by the Jets.
2nd Period
Calgary doubled their lead on the power play. Andrei Kuzmenko ripped one off the post and in from the far right side on Comrie. Kuzmenko recorded his 2nd goal of the season while Blake Coleman and Rory Kerins earned the assists at 4:46.
No stopping that 🎯
Despite outshooting Calgary 23-16 and having so many chances to get on the board. The Jets still couldn’t solve Wolf. The Flames led the way 2-0 at the end of the second.
3rd Period
Just 2:15 into the final frame, Jets captain Adam Lowry tipped in a shot from the blue line by Colin Miller to cut the lead to 2-1, giving his team—and the Winnipeg fans—some hope. Miller and Logan Stanley picked up the assists on the goal.
ROCK US LIKE A WAGON WHEEL LOWS ‼️
The Jets kept pressing—shot after shot after shot—but Wolf stood tall and denied them all.
Blake Coleman sealed the win for Calgary with an empty-net goal at 18:55, his 10th of the season.
Winnipeg finished their homestand with a 4-2-2 record. Not bad, but there were a few games they would have liked to grab two points from.
Post-Game
Jets head coach Scott Arniel on Eric Comrie: “I have no idea why we can’t score when he’s in the net. We’re the highest-scoring team in the league, and it just seems like we can’t give him any run support. He gives us a chance every night.”
Adam Lowry on the Jets’ inability to find the back of the net: “I don’t want to take anything away from Dustin. I think he played an exceptional game,” said Lowry. “I know we threw a lot of shots, but there were instances where those shots could have turned into more if we’d generated more traffic.”
Final Thoughts
Adam Lowry perfectly summed up what the Jets failed to do: they didn’t create enough traffic in front of the net to disrupt Wolf’s vision. Had they been able to do that, they would have had a much better chance to win the game.
That said, I don’t think the Jets should dwell on this loss too much. Generating net-front traffic is a relatively easy fix, especially for a team like Winnipeg.
Again, it was just one of those games where the Jets outplayed their opponent except their goaltender.
