Another week of Winnipeg Jets hockey is in the books, and it was a week with some mixed results. Ever since the Jets started the season 14-1-0, I’ve been keeping an eye at the top of the NHL standings to see how long the Jets could hold on to that top spot. After falling to 4th in the league, the Jets are back at the top of the league standings with 45 points in 32 games. The Jets have played a few more games than the Washington Capitals and the Minnesota Wild, so they currently sit 3rd in points percentage at .703.
I feel like it’s a good time now to kind of step back and recap the 4 games since last Sunday, now that the Jets have seemed to find their game again after a small losing streak. Last Sunday, the Jets fell 4-1 to the Blue Jackets at home. The game was pretty even through 2 periods, but the 3rd period was when the Jackets gained momentum and never looked back.
The Jets started this 4 game homestand on a bad note, but made a statement with the following game. The Bruins came to Winnipeg on Tuesday, and got blown out by the Jets in a 8-1 statement win. Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele led the way with 3 points each, and Hellebuyck won the battle of American goalies against 4 Nations face-off teammate Jeremy Swayman.
Then came the game on Thursday, where the Jets were looking to beat the Golden Knights in the regular season for the 1st time in a few years. This game could have gone either way, but the Jets fell 3-2 in overtime, marking their 1st loss in OT / shootout this season. Finally, the Jets again bounced back from a tough loss with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens last night. Josh Morrissey stood out throughout this game, collecting 2 assists and making all kinds of good plays when the Jets had a powerplay.
Another observation that I made while watching the 4-2 win was the play of the Jets newly formed 2nd line. The trio of Perfetti, Namestnikov and Chibrikov might not have scored this game, but they were noticeable each time they were on the ice. This line outshot the Canadiens 7-2 at 5 on 5, and overall had 9 scoring chances to just 4 for the Canadiens. With the return of Nikolaj Ehlers approaching, it will be interesting to see if Chibrikov remains in the lineup (particularly on this line), or if Ehlers will be re-inserted back with his familiar linemates.
Fast forward to this morning, and the Jets, with many moms of the players, got ready for the Jets “Moms Trip” in California this upcoming week. The Jets will play the Sharks on Tuesday night, with a late starting time of 9:30 pm CT. The following night, the Jets will head to Anaheim to take on the Ducks at 9:00 pm CT. Both of these games should be winnable for the Jets, and they’ve had some recent success against each of these Pacific division teams.
The Jets are 5-3-2 against the Sharks in their last 10 matchups. Most recently, the Jets easily defeated the Sharks 8-3 on October 18th. The Jets have had even more recent success against the Ducks, with a 9-1-0 record in their last 10 head to head games. It’s now been 7 straight regular season wins for the Jets over the Ducks, including the most recent game, a 6-0 win late last season in Anaheim. Overall, the Jets aren’t too satisfied with a 2-2 record at home this past week, but they’re ready to head West and take on the 2 teams at the bottom of the Pacific division standings. Stay tuned here at Jets Nation throughout the week for the latest Jets news and recaps on all the games this season.
