The Winnipeg Jets have re-signed defenceman Isaak Phillips to a two-year, two-way contract with an average annual value of $812,500 at the NHL level.
Phillips, 23, was acquired from the Chicago Blackhawks on January 15th in exchange for defenceman Dmitry Kuzmin. The left-shot blueliner was a restricted free agent after splitting the 2024–25 season between the NHL and AHL.
Originally drafted 141st overall by Chicago in the fifth round of the 2020 NHL Draft, Phillips has appeared in 56 career NHL games over the past four seasons. He has recorded two goals and 10 assists for 12 points, along with 31 penalty minutes.
Last season, Phillips played three NHL games for the Blackhawks and scored one goal. He spent the bulk of the year in the American Hockey League, tallying four goals and 16 points across 67 games while splitting time between the Rockford IceHogs and Manitoba Moose. His time with the Moose gave the Jets a closer look at his game after the midseason trade.
A native of Barrie, Ontario, Phillips is known for his mobility and physical play. At 6-foot-3 and over 200 pounds, he adds size to the Jets’ blue line depth. The two-way nature of his contract suggests he will be competing for a spot on the NHL roster come training camp, but will likely return to the Moose this season as there will not be many spots available on the Jets roster.
This signing adds to the Moose’s depth, as they look to rebound from a difficult 2024–25 season in which they finished near the bottom of the AHL standings. Phillips could be a call-up option for the Jets if injuries arise, but that will depend on how he performs in camp this September.
