The NHL dropped their Three Stars of the Week for the week ending March 8 on Monday, and Winnipeg Jets centreman Mark Scheifele leads the way as the First Star.
Scheifele, 32, contributed eight points during the week (3G, 5A), including a pair of game-winning goals to help Winnipeg notch a perfect week as they moved within five points of the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference (26-26-10).
The Kitchener, Ont. native kicked off the week with a three-point (1G, 2A) performance in Winnipeg’s 3-2 overtime comeback win over the Chicago Blackhawks on March 3, including the overtime winner, his franchise-record 18th career overtime finisher, along with assists on both of Winnipeg’s goals prior to that.
He continued his week on March 5 with a goal and an assist in the Jets’ 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. His 29th of the season gave Winnipeg a two-goal lead late in the second period, and he capped off his night with an assist on Kyle Connor’s empty-net goal.
The six-foot-three centre wrapped up his week with three points in Winnipeg’s win over the Vancouver Canucks on March 7, their third in a row. No. 55 tied the game late in the second period with his 30th of the year, the fifth time he’s reached that mark in his career, then grabbed two primary assists on Gabriel Vilardi’s tying goal in the third period and Josh Morrissey’s winner in the extra frame.
Scheifele, who was drafted seventh overall in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, leads Winnipeg in goals (30), assists (48), and points (78) this season, while also ranking sixth in the NHL in points through 62 total contests.
Scheifele and the Jets will look to extend their winning streak to four consecutive games on Tuesday when they take on the Anaheim Ducks at Canada Life Centre.
