The Winnipeg Jets announced Wednesday morning that they have recalled forward Danny Zhilkin from the Manitoba Moose and placed defenceman Haydn Fleury on injured reserve, retroactive to Jan. 6.
Zhilkin, 22, was selected 77th overall in the third round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft and has taken noticeable steps forward in his development with the Jets’ AHL affiliate this season. Through 30 games, he has already surpassed his previous career high in points, posting 14 (7G, 7A) after recording 10 points in 53 games last year. A speedy winger, Zhilkin has been an important part of the Moose’s improved performance compared to last season’s franchise-worst campaign.
Zhilkin could make his NHL debut as soon as Thursday against the Edmonton Oilers or Friday versus the Los Angeles Kings.
Fleury suffered a frightening collision Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, sliding hard into the end boards back-first and remaining down on the ice following the impact. He was stretchered off and transported to the hospital. Jets head coach Scott Arniel told Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press that Fleury was expected to stay overnight, though it was later confirmed he was discharged Tuesday evening. The full extent of his injuries remains unknown beyond a broken nose and a bruised back.
Fleury was also present at the Jets’ team meeting Wednesday morning, which Mark Scheifele described to Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun as a “morale boost.”
Fleury, 29, has yet to record a point in 17 games this season with Winnipeg. In 324 career NHL games, he has tallied 10 goals and 34 assists for 44 points.
The Jets will look to snap their 10-game losing streak on Thursday against the Oilers. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
