Domenic DiVincentiis delivered a stellar performance as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 in Game 2 of the Prospect Showdown tournament.
Florian Xhekaj opened the scoring for Montreal in the first period, and the Canadiens doubled their lead in the second period when Oliver Kapanen capitalized on a power play, barely sneaking the puck past DiVincentiis.
Colby Barlow had an early goal waved off due to a high stick, and Kieron Walton left the game with an upper-body injury after taking a massive hit from Owen Protz in the opening frame.
The Jets responded in quick fashion, with Danny Zhilkin and Chase Yoder contributing to two goals in under 20 seconds. Zhilkin fired one off the bar and in on the power play, while Yoder showcased his impressive stickhandling by toe-dragging past a Canadiens defender and backhanding the puck past goaltender Mikus Vecvanags.
In the third period, with the energy of the sold-out Bell Centre against them, the Jets kept up the pressure. Reggie Newman fed Colby Barlow a perfect saucer pass, and Barlow made no mistake, giving Winnipeg a 3-2 lead with 5:51 remaining.
Montreal responded late, as Ivan Demidov broke away on a one-on-one against DiVincentiis and roofed the tying goal with less than three minutes to play. The game looked headed for overtime, but Zhilkin found the back of the net with 25 seconds remaining, giving the Jets the game-winning goal despite being heavily outshot.
The standout for Winnipeg was DiVincentiis, who “stood on his head” all night, making at least 39 saves in the crease. Zhilkin earned runner-up honors with a power play goal and the late game-winner.
The Jets return to action tomorrow, facing the Ottawa Senators’ prospects at 6:00 p.m. CT at the Bell Centre. The game can be watched on the Jets website at winnipegjets.com.
