The MTS Centre remains a house of horrors for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Winnipeg Jets couldn’t be happier. A two goal performance from Drew Stafford led the way as the Jets soared past the Leafs 6-1, before a sold-out crowd on Portage and Donald. The Jets are 6-1 at home against Toronto since 2011.
The Leafs actually opened the scoring just two minutes in as Michael Grabner broke a 22 game goalless drought with his first of the season.
Stafford replied six minutes later, finishing off a lovely feed from Mark Scheifele by using a backhand move on rookie goalie Garret Sparks. Stafford’s second came on the power play after Nikolaj Ehlers rang one off the crossbar.
After a scoreless second, Scheifele backhanded home a loose puck early in the third and the floodgates opened. Andrew Ladd, Bryan Little and Anthony Peluso (yes, THAT Anthony Peluso) added goals in the final frame to seal the deal.

Three Keys:

1. A controversial disallowed goal against the Leafs was deadly. With the score 4-1, Daniel Winnik jammed the puck past Connor Hellebuyck in a goalmouth scramble. It was ruled a goal on the ice but Jets coach Paul Maurice challenged, claiming goalie interference. After a long review, the referees overturned the on-ice call. It all but dashed the Leafs chances and the Jets added two more ticks on the scoreboard.
2. Hellebuyck was solid between the pipes, stopping 32 out of 33 shots. While none were highlight reel material, Hellebuyck looked calm and collected in his second career start. He may be big and boring, but he’s very good as well.
3. The Scheifele-Stafford-Mathieu Perrault line were dancing all night. They combined for seven points and skated circles around the Leafs. Maurice should keep this line together.
