All good things must come to an end. Likewise, all bad things must cease as well. The 2015-16 Winnipeg Jets season mercifully ended with a 4-3 shootout victory over the Los Angeles Kings, thus finishing a disappointing campaign on a 4-game winning streak. Alas, too little too late.
The win also spoiled the Kings party as Los Angeles needed a win to clinch the Pacific Division title. The Kings will need Anaheim to lose on Sunday to claim the division.

Game Notes:

  • It looked like the Kings would cruise to victory in the early going. Goals by Tyler Toffoli, Tanner Pearson and Andy Andreoff gave Los Angeles a 3-0 lead midway through the second period. But the Jets found their skating legs late in the middle frame and were rewarded with goals from Andrew Copp and Nikolaj Ehlers to close the gap at intermission. Blake Wheeler equalized early in the third while Mark Scheifele scored the lone goal in the shootout.
  • Wheeler extended his point streak to 11 games while Scheifele finished the season on a 10-game point streak. Unfortunately, Scheifele didn’t hit the 30-goal plateau as shootout goals don’t count on the stat sheets as official goals.
  • Kevin Quinn and John Garrett who were calling the game on Sportsnet had a difficult time with Blake Wheeler’s name. On multiple occasions, both broadcasters thought his name was Mark Wheeler and they didn’t correct themselves whenever this faux pas happened. Remember, Sportsnet is the home for NHL Hockey for the next 10 years. Simply awful.
  • The Jets power play was the same as always. Pathetic. The Jets went 0/3 with the man advantage cementing their 30th place finish in power play percentage. The Jets converted 15% of their opportunities when a man up. If the Jets want to improve next season and make a charge for the playoffs, they must fix the power play!
  • A positive sign was the Jets gave the Kings zero chances with the power play, showing the discipline that was sorely lacking earlier in the season. This needs to continue into next season for the Jets.
  • With the win, the Jets will finish 25th overall in the standings which gives them a 7.5% chance of landing the first pick overall. The odds of the Jets winning the Auston Matthews sweepstakes aren’t great but stranger things have happened.

It’s been a long, sad season. No playoff hockey in Winnipeg. So to forget all that, here’s some puppies playing in the snow. See you next season.
