Jets Nation Recap: Jets Lose Third in a Row to Hurricanes

The third game of this five game road trip ends up in the loss column, just as the first two did. It was a different looking loss than the listless effort last night, but it was a loss nonetheless. Too many penalties (most of them being of the ‘dumb’ variety) and not enough offense until it was too late. With some big Central division match-ups on the horizon, let’s hope things get sorted out quickly.
Game Thoughts:
The Jets came out of the gate looking a bit quicker than they did last night (thankfully), but gave up an early softie again as Connor Hellebuyck came off the post a tad too soon and Elias Lindholm scored his first NHL goal. Their pace picked up a bit more after the goal, though they still gave up too many shots on net. Through the first, the Jets were outshot 18-11; on one hand that’s too many shots allowed but on the other hand they almost matched last night’s shot total in only one period!
The second period got chippier as frustration started to mount for the Jets. Andrew Copp took a retaliation penalty after a hit laid on Toby Enstrom. Then Josh Morrissey and Lee Stempniak mixed it up behind the net and the physicality really got going near the end of the period. With 39 seconds left in the period, Dustin Byfuglien took a high sticking call after Jordan Staal sent Copp into the boards and then Mark Scheifele cross checked anyone he could see until he and Teravainen got offsetting roughing calls. The shots were 7-7 in the second but Hellebuyck seemed to settle in and looked stronger than he had in the first.
The penalty parade continued in the third as Mark Stuart was much too occupied with Staal and wasn’t content with just getting away with boarding so he crosschecked him repeatedly until he got sent to the box. Moments later Victor Rask scored and it looked like the Jets were out of it. A sweet pass from Nikolaj Ehlers to Mark Scheifele made things a little closer, but another power play goal, this one being Noah Hanifin’s first-ever, put it out of reach.
Other observations:
- We’re going to hear a lot of ‘high glove!, high glove!’ as Hellebuyck was beat there once again, but he stopped 37 of 40 shots and made a couple of pretty spectacular saves. He’s young and would benefit from a healthy dose of patience.
- The Hurricanes went 2/7 on the power-play. That’s simply too many power plays.
- Patrik Laine played the majority of the game on a line with Adam Lowry and Andrew Copp. Somewhat unsurprisingly, he did not add to his NHL-leading goal-scoring total.
- The Jets are 0-3 on this east coast road trip, but now get two days off (!!!) before they play in Minnesota on Wednesday. They might even get in a practice for the first time since who-knows-when.
- Three stars go to Elias Lindholm, Viktor Rask, and Cam Ward.
