It sure looks like the Winnipeg Jets have found their goalie of the present. Connor Hellebuyck was simply sensational, making 37 saves while Mark Scheifele’s overtime winner (after the lengthiest video review in NHL history) gave the Jets a 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.
The win snapped the Caps seven-game winning streak while the Jets are on a very modest two-game streak to the good.
The Jets dominated the early stretch of the game but had a difficult time getting anything past Caps goalie Braden Holtby until Andrew Ladd’s power play marker with 7 seconds left in the opening frame.
Nicklas Backstrom replied with a power play goal of his own late in the second period.
After a scoreless third, the Caps dominated the three-on-three extra frame but Hellebuyck stood tall. Scheifele’s winner came off a setup from Jacob Trouba.
Seconds earlier, Trouba carried the puck over the blue line with Blake Wheeler trying to stay onside. Caps coach Barry Trotz was convinced Wheeler lifted his skate, meaning he was offside. After a review that was longer than The Godfather Part II, (great film by the way) the goal stood and the Jets take the extra point.

Three Keys:

1. Hellebuyck calls himself “big and boring” but he’s given this team the solid goaltending it needs. Most impressively, he stopped all five of Alexander Ovechkin’s shots, frustrating the Caps super sniper.
2. The coach’s challenge needs to be fixed. It took way too long to figure out whether Wheeler was offside or not. Yes, it was a very close call and Caps fans do have the right to be upset, but all reviews including coach’s challenges should go to the war room in Toronto.
3. Once again, the line of Scheifele, Drew Stafford and Mathieu Perrault were the best trio for the Jets. Paul Maurice was smart to keep them together after the Toronto game and they should stay together for the foreseeable future.
