We are in the dregs of summer, so we take a critical look at the Winnipeg Jets organizational cupboards and highlight who we feel are the Jets’ “Top 20 Prospects” when looking at a combination of potential and probability of positive impact for the franchise.
We continue our prospect profile turning to a fresh face, Luke Green.
Luke Green
Age: 18 | Position: RD |
Height: 6’0″ | Weight: 187 lbs |
Draft Year: 2016 | Round: Three |
The Winnipeg Jets went all-in on upside when they drafted Luke Green 79th overall. The dynamic offensive defenseman has all the skills it takes to succeed in the NHL. He is a plus-level skater, especially in four-way mobility, and an excellent puck handler.
The kid is not just tools, but results as well, scoring at a 0.59 point per game pace between his 16- and 17-year-old seasons in the QMJHL. Results matter as they serve as evidence that a player has the ability to turn their tools into something that can benefit the organization.
Green’s 0.57 point per game campaign in the 2015-16 season in the QMJHL enlists 57 cohorts according to the pGPS model. Of these 57 cohorts, a respectable 16 percent made NHL careers of 200 games or more. What is most interesting though is that two-thirds of those that made the NHL peaked as greater than third-pairing or depth defenders.
There is a tonne of upside in Green in terms of his ceiling, especially given with how well he controls the game with the puck on his stick. He can move the puck out of the defensive zone safely, but also create chances for his team and rush the puck up efficiently when the risk warrants. His defensive game is not bad either, given how much focus is on his offense.

What’s most interesting about Green is that his 2015-16 offensive production might undervalue how good offensively Green may be. We took a deeper look into the numbers earlier and found that Green put up these high scoring numbers despite minimal power play usage and suppressed secondary assist totals.
I had one non-Jet NHL scout tell me that the more they looked into Green, the better his upside seemed to be than even his scoring numbers presented.
For this reason we have Green opening up our top-10 prospects.
