The Winnipeg Jets announced the first round of cuts from their 2025 training camp on Monday afternoon.
Winnipeg opened the preseason Sunday night against the Minnesota Wild at Canada Life Centre. The Jets jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, thanks to goals from Morgan Barron and Danny Zhilkin. However, Minnesota answered with two goals, including one late in the third, sending the game to overtime. Yakov Trenin scored his second of the night in OT, giving the Wild a 3-2 win.
Monday was the players’ first day off of training camp, but the Jets still trimmed their roster by six, returning four players to their junior clubs and releasing two from tryout agreements.
Defenceman Edison Engle and forwards Jacob Cloutier, Kevin He and Owen Martin were sent back to their respective junior teams. Goaltender Alex Worthington was released from his amateur tryout and defenceman Ethan Frisch was released from his professional tryout.
Kevin He recorded one assist in Sunday’s contest, setting up Zhilkin’s goal with a pretty backhand pass from behind the back. The kid has a bright future, that’s for sure.
Following these cuts, 48 players remain on the camp roster.
The Jets hope to bounce back Tuesday night when they face the Edmonton Oilers at Canada Life Centre. Fans will get their first look at Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist in Jets uniforms. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. CDT, with coverage on TSN3.
Check back Tuesday morning for the pre-game article and again after the game for the post-game recap.
