Over the course of the offseason, the Winnipeg Jets locked up several key pieces of their core. The team reached deals with Morgan Barron (2x$1.85M), Gabriel Vilardi (6x$7.5M), and Dylan Samberg (3x$5.75M), before inking their superstar forward Kyle Connor to an eight-year, $96 million contract just before the 2025-26 campaign began. Now, extension talks are heating up between the Jets and their captain, Adam Lowry, who is entering the final year of his deal.
TSN’s Darren Dreger reported Wednesday morning that the Jets are “getting closer” to an extension with Lowry, whose five-year, $16.25 million contract is set to expire in July.
“Yeah, it’s such a great boost for the Winnipeg Jets and the city of Winnipeg to get their captain, Adam Lowry, back in the mix. It’s also been a priority for a long, long time by the organization to get Lowry locked up longer term,” Dreger said on Insider Trading. “We know that once Kyle Connor extended with the Jets last month, the contract focus very quickly shifted over to Lowry. Both the team and the player are super motivated to get something done. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s getting closer, and having him back on the ice is a big step in that direction.”
It’s safe to say both sides appear motivated to get a deal done sooner rather than later. But what might the term and value look like for a player who turns 33 this March?
A four-to-five-year deal seems most realistic, with five years being the most likely, one that would likely carry Lowry toward the end of his career, unless he chooses to keep playing into his late 30s. An appropriate AAV for a captain who leads both on and off the ice, and who plays such a significant role in the Winnipeg community, would likely fall in the $4.5-$4.75 million range.
Lowry underwent hip surgery in May following the Jets’ elimination from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He returned to the lineup Tuesday night in Los Angeles, where Winnipeg fell 3-0 to the L.A. Kings.
The St. Louis native was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, becoming the second pick in the Jets 2.0 era. Named captain ahead of the 2023-24 season, he’s since recorded 121 goals and 273 points in 776 career NHL games, all with Winnipeg.
The Jets continue their six-game road trip Friday in San Jose against the Sharks. Puck drop is at 9:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
