On April 6th, PuckPedia reported that the Winnipeg Jets have signed forward Kieron Walton to a three-year entry-level contract.
Walton, 19, was selected 187th overall by the Jets in the sixth round of the 2024 NHL Draft. Since then, he’s become one of the biggest breakout players in Canadian junior hockey, rapidly rising on prospect radars.
The looming 6’6″ Toronto native has been a dominant force this season for the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves, racking up an impressive 92 points (38 goals, 54 assists) in just 66 games. His offensive explosion has earned widespread attention from scouts and analysts around the league.
“He’s a skilled passer, capable of slipping pucks underneath defenders’ sticks to open teammates driving the net,” reads the EliteProspects 2024 NHL Draft Guide. “Whether he’s deking through defenders or knocking down tricky passes, he uses his full reach to handle the puck and make the next play.”
Walton’s size and reach are major assets. He uses his frame to protect the puck, win board battles, and extend plays in the offensive zone. His wingspan also contributes to his defensive impact, helping him disrupt passing lanes and maintain strong positioning.
The next step in Walton’s development is transitioning to professional hockey. While it’s not yet confirmed whether he’ll join the Manitoba Moose this year or next, he remains eligible for one more season of junior hockey. Regardless, he’ll eventually report to the Moose, where he’ll begin adjusting to the pace and physicality of the pro game. From there, the long-term goal will be earning a spot on the Jets’ NHL roster.
If Walton reaches his full potential, he could become a top-six playmaker and a valuable special teams contributor. If not, he still has the tools to be a reliable bottom-six forward capable of impacting games in multiple ways.
This signing clearly signals the Jets’ confidence in Walton’s future, whether he joins the Moose immediately or after one final year in the OHL.
