Facing elimination and trailing 3-1 in the series, the Winnipeg Jets knew that if they wanted to claw back against the Dallas Stars, it had to start with a win on home ice in front of the Whiteout. And they delivered in dominant fashion, shutting out the Stars 4-0 for the second straight playoff game at Canada Life Centre.
1st period:
The Jets came out flying in the opening period, peppering Jake Oettinger with shots and controlling the pace early. While they couldn’t solve the Stars’ netminder in the first 20 minutes, they outshot Dallas 11-4 and set the tone with relentless pressure.
2nd period:
Winnipeg finally broke through in the second period on a 4-on-4 rush. Neal Pionk led the charge into the Dallas zone, dishing the puck to Kyle Connor on the left wing. Connor then spotted Mark Scheifele entering the zone and fed him a crisp pass. Scheifele fired a shot from the top of the right circle that deflected off Dallas defenceman Thomas Harley’s skate and in, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead. It marked Scheifele’s fourth goal of the postseason.
In the final minutes of the second period, the Jets pressed hard on the power play, generating multiple high-danger chances. Jake Oettinger, however, was up to the task, turning aside everything Winnipeg threw his way. Mark Scheifele briefly appeared to have his second of the night — but the goal was waved off after it was ruled he had hit — or I guess you can say — propelled the puck into the net with his hand. A term Jets fans know all too well.
Despite the surge, the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.
3rd period:
Early in the third, Winnipeg was handed another power play opportunity — and this time, they capitalized. Nikolaj Ehlers, who’s been heating up this postseason, wasted no time. Kyle Connor worked the puck down low to Ehlers, who turned and fired a quick shot on goal. The puck found its way through Oettinger, giving Ehlers his fourth of the playoffs and doubling the Jets’ lead.
Winnipeg wasn’t done on the man advantage. With the power play clicking, the Jets struck again — this time courtesy of Vladislav Namestnikov. Alex Iafallo, working the puck down low, spotted Namestnikov all alone in the slot and fed him a perfect centering pass. With all the time in the world, Namestnikov made no mistake, ripping it past Oettinger to extend the lead to 3-0 and send the Whiteout into a frenzy.
Nikolaj Ehlers sealed the win — and the shutout — with a shorthanded empty-net goal with just 45 seconds remaining, his second of the night and fifth of the postseason. It capped off a dominant 4-0 win and marked back-to-back home shutouts for the Jets in this series.
Connor Hellebuyck was sharp when called upon, turning aside all 22 shots he faced, while the Jets fired 35 pucks on Jake Oettinger at the other end.
Final thoughts:
It was another game where Winnipeg proved to be the better team — but this time, they made their chances count, especially on the power play. They also did an excellent job shutting down Dallas’ top threats, including Mikko Rantanen, who was held off the scoresheet once again.
Now comes the big challenge: winning on the road. If the Jets want to force a Game 6 back in front of the Whiteout on Monday night, they’ll need to get it done in Dallas — something they’ve yet to do in this series.
