The Winnipeg Jets looked to bounce back this afternoon in Pittsburgh after an atrocious 6-1 loss to the Boston Bruins on Thursday, but despite pulling things together after a lacklustre opening couple of minutes, they fell in a shootout for the second time this week for their third consecutive loss (0-1-2).
The last time Winnipeg played with a noon start time was on Oct. 13, a game they won 5-2, but today they looked half-asleep out of the gate as Pittsburgh potted two goals in just 2:02 to start the game.
Egor Chinakhov opened the scoring at 1:06 with his 15th of the year when he cut above Jets defenceman Dylan DeMelo into the slot for a wrist shot that beat Connor Hellebuyck, who appeared to maybe catch an edge as he fell over on his right side trying to make the save. Shortly after, Rickard Rakell made it 2-0 at 2:02, tapping in a backhand pass from Bryan Rust just above the crease for his 14th.
DeMelo, who was on the ice for both goals, didn’t see another shift for the remainder of the opening period.
Morgan Barron earned a new career high in goals (11) just 1:48 later to answer right back for Winnipeg, cutting Pittsburgh’s lead in half. Barron’s shot off a rebound from Brad Lambert was blocked by Erik Karlsson and fluttered in as both he and Karlsson slid into Penguins netminder Arturs Silovs. Pittsburgh challenged for goaltender interference, but the original call on the ice stood.
The Jets made it a new game 6:10 into the second period when Cole Koepke and Adam Lowry broke out on a shorthanded 2-on-1. Lowry sent the puck over to Koepke, who went forehand to backhand to beat Silovs for his sixth.
Karlsson hit double digits when he put Pittsburgh back in front at 15:22 of the second, beating Hellebuyck from the right faceoff circle.
At 4:04 into the third frame, Neal Pionk, in his first game back from injury, tied things up 3-3 when his point shot went in off the post past Silovs for his third.
“Yeah, it’s nice to make a contribution, but still the same feeling we lost,” said Pionk post-game. “And look forward to tomorrow. So, yeah, it’s good to be back out there, but hopefully different results tomorrow.”
Lambert, who keeps getting better every game, potted his second NHL goal at 8:36 to give Winnipeg the lead. He walked into the high slot and fired a wrist shot past Silovs to record his first multi-point game in the NHL.
Karlsson netted his second of the game to tie the contest at 12:45, which would eventually require extra time to decide a winner.
Both goaltenders stole the show in overtime, and after five minutes of 3-on-3 a shootout was needed to decide who would take home the extra point.
Sidney Crosby and Rakell scored in the shootout for Pittsburgh while Silovs made saves on Jonathan Toews and Gustav Nyquist to secure the extra point, defeating Winnipeg 5-4.
Winnipeg dropped to 28-29-12 while Hellebuyck made 26 stops.
The Jets will conclude their three-game road trip tomorrow in New York against the Rangers, looking to get back in the win column. Puck drop is set for an early 11:00 a.m. start on TSN3.
