The Winnipeg Jets dropped their second game of the NHL Preseason, as they fell 3-2 to the Edmonton Oilers in overtime on Sunday evening in Edmonton.
Despite facing off against the Oilers in their second game in less than 24 hours, the Jets came out flying to start the game, but in the end, Edmonton’s firing power got the job done.
The Jets opened the scoring just 17 seconds in with a point shot from defenseman Logan Stanley that was tipped home by David Gustafsson, beating Oilers’ goaltender Oliver Rodrigue to make it 1-0 for the visitors.
Three minutes later, the Oilers would tie the game, as Sam O’Rielly beat Eric Comrie at 3:23 into the opening frame.
The second period offered no scoring, but in the third both teams answered once, with Edmonton’s Raphael Lavoie giving Edmonton their first lead of the game on a power play one-timer that cleanly beat Eric Comrie.
But, like Edmonton’s early first period response, the Jets responded quickly, tying the game at two just 10 seconds later with a Dominic Toninato wrist shot off a play set up by 2024 foruth round draft pick Kevin He.
The game required extra time to determine a winner, but just 1:17 into overtime, Cam Dineen got the winner for the Oilers, with Vasily Podkolzin and Matt Savoie picking up the assists.
Eric Comrie finished the game with 25 saves out of the 28 shots he faced for a .893 SV% in the overtime loss.
“Sloppy at times,” head coach Scott Arniel said after the loss. “Some of the execution was off, but at the end of the day, for the fans, it was an OT game. It’s fun. Guys got to get experience. Veteran guys have got to get their feet wet, kind of get themselves up to speed by getting away from summer hockey. You just take what it is.”
Winnipeg next takes the ice on Wednesday at home against the Oilers once again. The game starts at 7:00 PM CDT and you can watch on TSN3.
