The Winnipeg Jets have accomplished many great things this season, one of which is sticking to their style of play, even when things haven’t gone their way. Tonight, the Jets snapped their three-game winless streak with a dominant 4-1 victory, a perfect example of perseverance.
The Jets, who have faced some power play struggles lately, seem to have found their groove again, going 2-for-2 on the man advantage tonight and now 4-for-5 in their last two matchups. Mark Scheifele scored his 35th goal of the season on their first power play to give them a 1-0 lead in the first period. Nikolaj Ehlers doubled their lead with another power play goal in the opening frame. The Jets now lead the NHL in power play goals with 55 this season.
In the second period, Kyle Connor extended the lead to 3-0 with his 32nd goal of the season, followed by captain Adam Lowry’s 12th goal of the season midway through the middle frame. The Flyers didn’t register a shot on goal for the first 11 minutes of the second period. Although they outshot the Jets 6-1 over the final 8:50, the score remained 4-0 heading into the third period.
Philadelphia managed to score the lone goal of the third period with just under three minutes remaining. Matvei Michkov fired one past Eric Comrie, making it 4-1 and earning his 20th goal of his rookie campaign.
Speaking of Eric Comrie, despite the late goal, he was solid once again between the pipes for the Jets. The Alberta native stopped 21 of 22 shots, recording a .955 SV%.
Winnipeg’s top line trio of Scheifele, Connor, and Gabriel Vilardi combined for 8 points—Scheifele and Connor each with three, and Vilardi adding two. Just another day at the office for these three.
Tonight marked the first half of a back-to-back, with New Jersey on the schedule tomorrow evening in Newark. Connor Hellebuyck will start in net, and the Jets will look for a rare back-to-back win.
Also, all eyes are on Kevin Cheveldayoff to see what moves he can pull off before Friday’s 2:00 p.m. CT trade deadline, just a couple of hours before the Jets face the Devils at 6:00 p.m. CT.
