Saturday night, the Winnipeg Jets finally picked up their first win of the preseason, taking down the Calgary Flames 4-2 at Canada Life Centre.
Heading into the matchup, there were questions about who would start in net. We’ve already seen Eric Comrie, Isaac Poulter, Domenic DiVincentiis, Alex Worthington, and Thomas Milic dress this preseason, but not the reigning MVP and Vezina Trophy winner, Connor Hellebuyck.
Jets head coach Scott Arniel cleared that up before puck drop, confirming that Comrie would play the full game against Calgary. Hellebuyck, meanwhile, is set to start the final two games of the preseason, Sept. 30 in Minnesota and Oct. 3 in Calgary.
It’s a bit surprising to see Hellebuyck scheduled for back-to-back games rather than being spaced out, but we all know he likes to play a lot, and I’m sure he wants to get reps in before the season opener against the Dallas Stars Oct. 9.
Last preseason in Minnesota, Hellebuyck had a rough outing, giving up eight goals in an 8-5 loss. Fans were quick to overreact and even started questioning him, over a preseason game. In reality, it meant nothing, and he went on to win both the Hart and Vezina trophies that very season. That’s why taking preseason results too seriously doesn’t make sense. For stars like Hellebuyck, it’s just about shaking off the rust and getting back into rhythm,
Fans will finally get their first look at Hellebuyck on Tuesday night when the Jets face the Wild in Minnesota. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. CDT and you can catch the game on winnipegjets.com.
Make sure to stop by Tuesday morning to catch the pre-game article.
