The Winnipeg Jets announced that they have recalled Nic Petan on an emergency basis, while redeploying the defender Julian Melchiori back to the Manitoba Moose.
These two moves are unrelated, with each having to do with emergency basis call-ups.
Melchiori was up for the Winnipeg Jets with Dustin Byfuglien feeling ill with the flu. Byfuglien missed a match against the Vancouver Canucks where the Jets were outshot (goals, saves, misses, blocks) 15 to 10 with the 23-year-old defender on the ice.
This doubles Melchiori’s NHL sample size to two NHL games, where the team has been outshot 20-12.
Petan returns once again to the NHL with the previous emergency call-up, JC Lipon, being injured as well. Petan played 14 games early for the Jets, where the 20-year-old centre struggled to outshoot the opposition. The Jets only controlled 41 per cent of shots with Petan on the ice, despite out shooting the opposition by 54 per cent with Petan on the bench.
Some of this was likely due to Petan’s most common linemates being Andrew Copp and Chris Thorburn; however, there were some obvious signs that the young forward was struggling to keep to the NHL’s pace.
Petan has been dominating in the AHL though, or at least as much as one can given the Manitoba Moose’s limited abilities. Nic Petan is scoring at a 0.70 point per game clip, with the next highest pace on the team being Lipon’s 0.67 point per game pace. The Moose have been outscored at even strength 43-31 with Petan on the ice, but their share of the goals has been better with Petan on the ice than on the bench.
