Welcome to NHL trade deadline day. It was a quite morning for the Jets, apart from a rather interesting interview from Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff on TSN, but with 2+ hours to go until the deadline, the Jets have made their 1st move. The Jets have acquired defenceman Luke Schenn from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2026 and a 4th round pick in 2027.
Schenn, 35, was recently acquired by the Penguins in a trade with the Nashville Predators. In 61 games this season with the Predators, Schenn has 1 goal and 4 assists for 5 points. The Penguins received Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak for dealing out forward Michael Bunting and a 4th round pick in 2026. The Penguins wasted no time in flipping Schenn before the deadline. The Jets have added to their depth on the blue line, which was something they were looking for this trade deadline.
Schenn, a former 1st round pick by the Maple Leafs in 2008, brings over 1000 games of NHL experience. After beginning his career in Toronto, Schenn has played for over 7 different teams, which includes being traded at the trade deadline a few times already. Schenn becomes the oldest member of the Jets at 35, and will bring a tough, stable presence on the Jets blue line. Expect Schenn to play a role on the penalty kill too, as he’s frequently been known to be a shutdown defender.
Quickly analyzing this trade, it’s a solid move for the Jets that will help them on the right side. Less pressure will be on Dylan DeMelo and Neal Pionk to play in the “heavy” situations, and if Schenn slots into the 3rd pairing, Colin Miller could be moved down as the extra defender. The price (a 2nd and a 4th) is quite a lot to pay for Schenn, but seeing other returns from other trades today, the “sellers” market is in full effect, and there’s always a certain price to pay on deadline day.
