The 2025 NHL trade deadline is starting to heat up, with under 90 minutes to go before GMs can no longer make any moves to improve their rosters. The Jets continue to be busy on the phones, and just minutes after acquiring Luke Schenn from the Penguins, the Jets have made their 2nd trade of the day. It’s a reunion for a former Jets forward, as the Jets have acquired forward Brandon Tanev from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 2027.
Tanev, 33, was a member of the Winnipeg Jets for parts of 4 seasons between 2015 and 2019. After 2 seasons with the Penguins, Tanev has been a member of the Kraken for the last 4 seasons. In 60 games with the Kraken this season, Tanev has scored 9 goals and added 8 assists for 17 points. Tanev’s career best year came with the Kraken back in 2022-23, when he scored 16 goals and 19 assists for 35 points. This isn’t quite the top 6 acquisition the Jets were looking for this deadline, but it’s a move that helps the Jets forward group in the bottom 6.
Joining the NHL as a member of the Jets (for 3 games) in 2015-16 as an undrafted forward, Tanev now brings over 500 games of NHL experience with him in his return to Winnipeg. The winger is in his final season of a 6 year, 21 million dollar deal, and will become a free agent after this season. Tanev is described as being a forward that’s “both tough and annoying to play against”, and is someone who can play a variety of roles within his usual bottom 6 roster spot.
As for a brief analysis of the Jets 2nd move of the day, I believe it’s another solid move that will improve the roster as it stands now. Most of the Jets injuries this season have been in their bottom 6, so Tanev brings some stability to that part of the forward group. Once again, the price (a 2nd) is a lot to pay for Tanev, but it’s only hours before the deadline, so prices are as high as they will ever be at this time. The market continues to favour the teams “selling” their players, so expect to see similar prices being paid around the league as the trade deadline heats up in the final hour.
2 moves down for the Jets now, who apparently “aren’t done yet”, so stay tuned here on Jets Nation for what the Jets decide to do next before the 2 pm CT deadline.
