On Jan. 2nd, Frank Seravalli revealed new details about Jonathan Toews’ potential return to the NHL. It’s been almost two years since the three-time Stanley Cup champion last suited up, but recent reports suggest his healing journey in India has sparked interest from multiple teams.
Toews, who has been battling chronic inflammatory response disorder, shared a detailed account of his five-week recovery in India. Seravalli reports that the 35-year-old feels better than he has in years and has resumed skating, even returning to his playing weight. His agent, Pat Brisson of CAA Sports, is fielding offers from interested teams, though it’s unclear whether Toews will attempt a return this season or wait until the 2025-26 campaign.
Seravalli identified three teams as frontrunners for Toews’ return such as the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Colorado Avalanche, and the Winnipeg Jets—his hometown team. With Toews potentially eyeing a comeback, the question is: how realistic is it for him to join the Jets this season or next season?
This season
In my view, it’s highly unlikely that Jonathan Toews will join the Jets this season. After spending nearly two years away from the NHL and just completing his recovery, it would be a significant leap for him to return to the intensity of an NHL season. While Toews has reported feeling better than ever, it would be premature for him to jump into full competition at this stage. A more realistic scenario would see him continuing his training through the summer, then making a decision for the 2025-26 season.
That said, if Toews were to sign with the Jets, it would likely be a one-year, league-minimum contract. With his health and fitness still a question mark, a low-risk deal makes the most sense for both Toews and the Jets. In terms of his role, Toews would likely start as the fourth-line center, but if his game recovers, he could potentially move up to a higher role, with Vlad Namestnikov shifting to the fourth line. This would be especially beneficial given the Jets’ ongoing struggles in the face-off circle. If Toews can return to his form as one of the NHL’s best face-off specialists, it would help address one of the team’s biggest weaknesses.
2025-26 season
If Toews were to join the Jets, next season seems like the most realistic scenario if he decides to continue his NHL career. With a full summer to focus on his training, this timeframe would give him the opportunity to catch up to the intense competition level of the NHL. It would also allow him more time to fully recover from his illness and ramp up his physical conditioning.
Another factor in favor of the Jets is that Winnipeg is Toews’ hometown. This would be an attractive option for him as he considers his future in the NHL—he wouldn’t have to leave home, and he has family in Manitoba to support him. There’s something special about playing for your hometown team, especially when you’ve already achieved so much in your career.
If Toews decides to suit up for the Jets next season, I, for one, will be more excited than ever. The idea of having a hometown kid, NHL legend, and three-time Stanley Cup champion in Winnipeg’s lineup is a dream for many fans. Let’s make it happen, Chevy!
