activities of the St. John’s Ice Caps, the AHL affiliation of the Winnipeg
Jets. Similar to the Future NHEhlers
weekly article, we review all the stats and news we can find for your IceCaps.

The
Statistics

 
The IceCaps
played 2 games this week, earning 2 of 4 points as they make their final playoff
push over the last 10 games.  They may
have won a game but all of their underlying performance metrics have
declined.  Their shot and goal
differences have increased while their possession statistics have dropped.  Even their luck-based statistics such as PDO
and their Special-Teams Index saw a decline – not promising if they have to
fight and claw to make up the 9 point difference between them and 8th
place.

Friday’s
5-4 OT Win vs Manchester

In the
first game against Manchester the IceCaps outplayed the Monarch and had a
little bit of puck luck on their side as they were ultimately able to walk away
the winners.  Hellebuyck had a rare off
game where he was a bit rusty while the Monarchs managed to capitalize on three
of their seven power play opportunities – definitely  a way to make your victory much harder to
obtain.

Saturday’s
1-4 Loss vs Manchester

The next
night these two teams went right back at it but the IceCaps could not keep up
their momentum.  St. John’s was outplayed
and were beaten to a tune of 4 to 1.  The
IceCaps did a similar maneuver to every other AHL team where they like to ride
the same goalie in back to backs.  Connor
Hellebuyck started the game but was pulled after he allowed 4 goals in 18 shots
earning a Really Bad Start (the statistical opposite of a quality start).  Peter Budaj played the last half of the game
in relief and was a perfect 18 for 18.

possession teams in the AHL.
