The
Statistics

An
interesting week for the IceCaps’ analytics – their recent success in earning 7
of 8 points this week seems to be a bit of smoke and mirrors, as they were standing on
the back of outstanding goaltending. They may have jumped in the league standings (because of how bad the
bottom of the Western Conference is) but their goal and shot differentials did
not improve. They did see a slight jump in
their Est. Fenwick Close while their PDO regressed to the norm. Meanwhile, their special teams dropped in efficiency, predominately on the penalty kill.

Friday’s
4-3 OT Win @ Manchester

It was a busy weekend for the IceCaps, with three back-to-back-to-back games. The skaters were outplayed by Manchester the entire game (partly due to score
effects) but Connor Hellebuyck kept them in the game with an outstanding
effort. Hellebuyck closed off his 15th straight start with stopping 43 of 46 saves, good enough to earn
himself a quality start.  The hardest
working player was credited to Brenden Kichton.

Saturday’s
3-2 OT Loss @ Manchester

In a back
to back game the IceCaps decided to start Hellebuyck again (typically a bad
idea) but Connor was in it the entire game making 41 of 44 saves to earn a
second consecutive Quality Start in his 16th consecutive start
(goalie are voodoo but Hellebuyck is good). Despite starting
the game with a 2-0 lead the Monarch came back with 3 unanswered goals to
win. On the bright-side, at least the IceCaps earned a
point.  The only IceCap to earn a star
was Eric O’Dell but Hellebuyck definitely earned one. The hardest working player was Keaton
Ellerby.

Sunday’s
5-2 Win @ Portland

The IceCaps
finally decided not to start Hellebuyck (after 16 consecutive games with the
last 2 the previous 2 days). In his
place was ECHL call-up, Jussi Olkinuora, who performed as well as you could ask. He stopped 24 of 26 shots and earned a
Quality Start. The rest of the Ice Caps
chipped in, while dominating Portland in play. The IceCaps walked
away with a 5-2 victory and 2 points banked in the standings. Not a bad outcome for the third game in a back-to-back-to-back. The hardest working player was Austen
Brassard.

Wednesday’s
3-2 SO Win @ Portland

Another
game where the goaltender stood out his head and despite the skaters being massively
outplayed. The IceCaps walked away the winners, this time in the shootout. The team owes thanks to Hellebuyck’s 41 save performance. The Ice Caps were able to finish the week with 7 of their 8 points – an
impressive feat.  Jason Jaffray returned
to the line up after missing the last 15 games with an injury. The hardest working player was Patrice
Cormier.

Transactions

  • Eric O’Dell
    has been recalled to Winnipeg.

The Schedule

The
schedule is much lighter this week for the IceCaps with only two games, but playing the top team in the league
combined with a back-to-back away is going to make it difficult to earn all 4
points.
