After wrapping up their three-game road trip in San Jose on Sunday, the Winnipeg Jets return home to begin their season-long eight-game homestand Tuesday against a Central Division foe in the Chicago Blackhawks at Canada Life Centre.
The Jets and Sharks were locked in a tight matchup Sunday. Morgan Barron opened the scoring with his first goal since Dec. 21, his eighth of the season, early in the first period. San Jose tied it early in the third when Will Smith scored his 18th, batting the puck out of mid-air on a 2-on-1 past Connor Hellebuyck. The game needed overtime, where Michael Misa netted his fourth of the year to hand Winnipeg its second straight overtime loss. Hellebuyck made 31 saves as the Jets fell to 23-26-10.
Chicago snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with a 4-0 shutout win over the Utah Mammoth. Teuvo Teravainen scored his 11th and 12th of the season, while goaltender Arvid Soderblom earned his first NHL shutout with 22 saves, helping the Blackhawks improve to 23-28-9.
The Hawks also made their first move of trade deadline week ahead of Friday’s 2:00 p.m. CT deadline, sending 32-year-old defenceman Connor Murphy to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for a 2028 second-round pick.
Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey, who has been sidelined with an injury suffered at the Olympics, skated on his own Monday at Hockey For All Centre ahead of the team’s optional skate. Head coach Scott Arniel said afterward, per Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press, that Morrissey is trending toward a return Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks. The Jets will be without their No. 1 defenceman for at least the first two games of the homestand.
Arniel also added he doesn’t believe forward Nino Niederreiter’s season is over, despite reports suggesting otherwise. Niederreiter underwent surgery and is expected to be out 4-6 weeks.
It’s the second-last meeting of the season between the two teams. The series is tied 1-1: Winnipeg won the first game 6-3 on Oct. 30, and Chicago responded with a 2-0 shutout win on Jan. 19. They’ll meet one final time March 31 in the Windy City.
