The Winnipeg Jets will be looking for some revenge against the Buffalo Sabres tonight as they meet for the second time this week at Canada Life Centre.
Winnipeg wrapped up its five-game road swing Wednesday night in Montreal, falling 3-2 to the Canadiens in a shootout. Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor each scored their 14th goals of the season, and Eric Comrie made 29 saves in the Jets’ second straight defeat. Winnipeg finished the trip 1-3-1 and is now 1-5-1 since the announcement of Connor Hellebuyck’s injury.
Buffalo opened a five-game road trip Wednesday night in Philadelphia against the Flyers, where they struck first on Jason Zucker’s eighth of the season before allowing four unanswered goals in a 5-2 loss. Bowen Byram scored the other Sabres goal, his sixth, and Colten Ellis made 30 saves in the loss.
Monday’s matchup in Buffalo was a rough one for Winnipeg. The Jets gave up two goals within the first three minutes, 18 seconds apart, and trailed 3-0 after the opening period, ending Comrie’s night early. Kyle Connor got the Jets on the board in the second, but the momentum evaporated quickly when Alex Tuch restored Buffalo’s three-goal lead just over a minute later. The Sabres added another 41 seconds into the third, sealing a 5-1 defeat. Winnipeg will be aiming for a much better effort tonight against the same Buffalo team.
I expect Thomas Milic to get the nod tonight, mainly because the Jets play in Edmonton tomorrow against an offence-loaded Oilers team. And with how well Comrie played in Montreal, Winnipeg will likely need a strong performance in goal, especially if they can cut down on the turnovers that continue to hurt them.
Projected lineup (subject to change):
Connor – Scheifele – Vilardi
Namestnikov – Toews – Perfetti
Niederreiter – Lowry – Iafallo
Pearson – Barron – Koepke
Morrissey – DeMelo
Samberg – Pionk
Stanley – Salomonsson
Milic
Comrie
