The Winnipeg Jets were in a tightly contested matchup with the struggling Calgary Flames Monday night. Tied 1-1 late in the third period, Mark Scheifele netted the go-ahead goal with 4:54 remaining, the eventual game-winner, lifting the Jets to their fifth straight victory. Connor Hellebuyck was stellar once again, stopping 32 of 33 shots for a .970 save percentage.
It may have been a low-scoring affair, but there was plenty to take away from what proved to be a memorable night in Calgary.
Jonathan Toews scores first goal as a Jet
With the Flames leading 1-0 in the third period, Winnipeg went to the power play. Neal Pionk fired a point shot toward the net, and Jonathan Toews redirected it past Dustin Wolf to tie the game at 2:41, his first goal in a Jets uniform.
It was Toews’ first goal since April 13, 2023, a span of two years and 189 days, per NHL Stats. The 37-year-old became just the third Winnipeg native to score a goal for the Jets since the franchise’s return in 2011–12, joining Eric Fehr and Cody Eakin.
“As the saying goes, you’ve got to find those pucks around the net,” Toews said postgame. “I was able to get a stick on that one, and it’s nice to see one go in.”
Scheifele continues to dominate
Mark Scheifele continued his unreal start to the season, scoring his team-leading seventh goal, and the game-winner, late in the third.
After giving the puck to Kyle Connor in the neutral zone, Scheifele drove hard to the net, beat Nazem Kadri to the crease, and tapped in a perfect feed from Connor to put the Jets ahead 2-1.
THE DYNAMIC DUO COMES UP CLUTCH 🥶
“I trust that guy with the puck every single time,” Scheifele said of Connor. “He’s an amazing player, and I’m lucky to play with him.”
Morrissey sets new franchise mark
Josh Morrissey entered the night just one assist shy of passing Dustin Byfuglien for the most assists by a defenceman in franchise history. He picked up the secondary assist on Scheifele’s game-winner, giving him 295 career assists, and he did it in his hometown of Calgary.
PK remains elite
Winnipeg’s penalty kill stayed perfect on five Calgary power plays, improving to a remarkable 96.3% on the season, according to NHL Stats. The Jets have allowed just one power-play goal all year.
The Jets return home for back-to-back games this week, hosting the Seattle Kraken on Thursday before facing the Flames again Friday night at Canada Life Centre.
