Happy Halloween, Jets fans, and Halloween on a Friday just got even better after the Winnipeg Jets took down the Chicago Blackhawks 6-3 Thursday night at Canada Life Centre.
Top line treats Chicago to a nightmare
The Jets’ top trio of Kyle Connor, Mark Scheifele, and Gabriel Vilardi was lights out. The line combined for nine points, with Vilardi scoring twice.
After Chicago tied the game 1-1 off a weird bounce, Scheifele and Vilardi connected on a 2-on-1 rush. Scheifele slid a pass across, and Vilardi ripped it past Spencer Knight to make it 2-1. Vilardi later added his second of the night on the power play to extend the lead to 4-1.
“I thought we played really well in the first. Like you said, an unlucky bounce, not much you can do about those goals,” said Vilardi postgame. “I thought we played really well in the second and kind of dominated most of the third but had that little spree there. It was one of our more complete games of the season.”
Scheifele and Connor also found the scoresheet, showing how dangerous this line can be when they’re clicking.
Morrissey gets his first of the season
Josh Morrissey has been steady offensively this year but had yet to find the back of the net, until Thursday night. His slap shot from the point in the third period hit the post, bounced off Knight’s back, and trickled in.
“I just tried to make a good, quick shot, and I kind of faded away after, I guess, like a Kobe shot,” joked Morrissey. “I didn’t see it. I just heard it. And then I heard the fans, and it went in. So, it was nice to nice to get one there.”
Toews faces his former team
For the first time in his career, Jonathan Toews lined up against the Chicago Blackhawks. It was definitely an odd sight seeing him in Jets colours, but he looked comfortable against his old club. The longtime Hawk won 70% of his faceoffs and picked up an assist on Morrissey’s goal.
Nyquist exits early
The only downside on the night came when Gustav Nyquist left the game with an apparent injury. Head coach Scott Arniel said postgame that the Swedish forward “tweaked something” and that the team would re-evaluate him on Friday.
The Jets close out their two-game homestand Saturday afternoon when Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins visit Canada Life Centre. Puck drop is set for 2:00 p.m. CDT on TSN3.
