Kyle Connor scored 46 seconds into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets to a 4-3 win over the Minnesota Wild at Grand Casino Arena on Tuesday night. Nino Niederreiter, Vlad Namestnikov, and Gabe Vilardi also scored for the Jets, while Logan Stanley (2A) and Neal Pionk (2A) both had multi-point nights. Connor Hellebuyck was excellent, stopping 33 shots for his fifth win of the season as Winnipeg improved to 7-3-0.
Great start sets the tone
The Jets couldn’t have asked for a better start. They struck twice just 22 seconds apart, their quickest pair of goals this season. Stanley’s point shot found its way through traffic before Vilardi tapped it home, and moments later, Pionk’s blast from the blue line was tipped in by Namestnikov to make it 2-0. Winnipeg took that two-goal lead into the first intermission.
A good old BANG BANG ‼️
Second period struggles continue
The middle frame continues to be an issue for Winnipeg. The Wild took control of the puck and pace, outshooting the Jets 13-5 and clawing back into the game. Kirill Kaprizov buried a loose puck early, and later, Brock Faber got a fortunate bounce when his shot went off the glass, off Hellebuyck, and in to tie it 2-2.
Niederreiter’s timely equalizer
After Marcus Johansson gave Minnesota its first lead of the night on a power play, the Jets regrouped and answered back. The newly formed line of Morgan Barron, Gustav Nyquist, and Niederreiter went to work, and the Swiss forward capitalized on a rebound to tie the game 3-3 at 11:35 of the third.
CRASH THE CAGE ‼️
Connor completes comeback
The Jets wasted no time grabbing the extra point. After forcing a turnover in the neutral zone, Josh Morrissey carried the puck in and dished it to Mark Scheifele, who found Connor in the high slot. Connor ripped a wrist shot through traffic and into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
“We kind of pressured when it was loose puck in the neutral zone. Got it turned around, got some speed and great entry by J-Mo and Scheif, and I just found some quiet ice,” said Connor. “I was trying to get through a screen, saw a little hole on the far side.”
Hellebuyck holds strong
Hellebuyck was the difference-maker. Winnipeg was outshot 16-10 in the first and 13-5 in the second, but their star goaltender stood tall throughout. He finished with 33 saves and a .917 SV%, earning his fifth win of the season and keeping the Jets in striking distance all night.
Winnipeg now returns home for two straight games, beginning Thursday against the Chicago Blackhawks. You can catch the action on TSN3 at 7:00 p.m. CDT.
