The Winnipeg Jets closed out the 2025 Prospect Showdown on Sunday evening, facing the Ottawa Senators at Montreal’s Bell Centre.
As has been the trend this weekend, Winnipeg surrendered the opening goal. On a 2-on-1 rush, Philippe Daoust slid a cross-crease pass to Oskar Pettersson, who finished the play by beating Jets goaltender Alex Worthington on the glove side.
Winnipeg knew they’d face some challenges in this one, dressing 11 forwards and seven defencemen, while also missing Kieron Walton, who was sidelined with an upper-body injury suffered last night against Montreal.
Ottawa led after 20 minutes, but then former Winnipeg Ice blueliner Ben Zloty tied it up midway through the second. Danny Zhilkin, who’s had an impressive tournament, fed Zloty with a perfect saucer pass, and Zloty went forehand-to-backhand to bury it.
Later in the frame, Winnipeg took advantage on the power play. Nikita Chibrikov fired a wrist shot from the top of the left circle, and Jacob Julien got a stick on it to redirect the puck past Ottawa’s goaltender, giving the Jets a 2-1 lead.
But with just 6.4 seconds remaining in the period, Ottawa answered back on their own power play. Jorian Donovan’s point shot made its way through traffic and beat Alex Worthington, tying the game 2-2 heading into the third.
The Jets were heavily outshot in the final frame, struggling to generate much sustained pressure offensively. Fortunately, Worthington was sharp all night, much like Domenic DiVincentiis was the night before. It’s been an impressive showing from Winnipeg’s goaltending prospects throughout the weekend.
Sixty minutes wasn’t enough to settle things, so the game went to overtime. It didn’t take long for Winnipeg to finish it off, as Zhilkin drove behind the net for a wraparound attempt. The rebound bounced right to Fabian Wagner, who buried it to secure a 3-2 victory and give the Jets a perfect 2-0-0 record at the 2025 Prospect Showdown.
It was an exciting weekend full of standout performances, but the real action is right around the corner. Jets training camp opens Thursday at the Hockey For All Centre, with the first preseason game coming next Sunday when Winnipeg hosts the Minnesota Wild.
