According to TSN’s Chris Johnston, Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers is expected to hit the open market this offseason, and several teams are already preparing to make a strong push for him. On The Chris Johnston Show, Johnston reported that “Ehlers will likely hit the market; Chicago and Carolina could make a lot of sense.”
The Carolina Hurricanes, in particular, have been aggressive in their pursuit of top-end talent. They acquired Jake Guentzel at the 2024 trade deadline and reportedly expressed interest in Mikko Rantanen prior to that. However, despite acquiring those star forwards, they’ve struggled to lock them up long-term. Ehlers may be a more attainable option and one whose style fits seamlessly into Carolina’s fast-paced, puck-possession system. His elite skating and slick puck skills would complement their offensive structure perfectly. More importantly, he’d likely step into a bigger role than he’s ever had in Winnipeg — something he’s reportedly been seeking for some time.
The Chicago Blackhawks are in a different position but have similar motivations. Still in the early stages of their rebuild, the Blackhawks are focused on surrounding franchise centrepiece Connor Bedard with elite talent. With Spencer Knight expected to stabilize the goaltending situation, the addition of a high-end winger like Ehlers would help accelerate their transition into a more competitive phase. Placing Ehlers alongside Bedard would instantly raise the ceiling of their offense and offer a more balanced top-six.
That said, the door isn’t entirely closed on a return to Winnipeg. Much like Mitch Marner’s situation in Toronto, Ehlers remains open to the possibility of re-signing — if the offer and role are right. Jets players and coaches have publicly voiced their desire to keep him.
Ultimately, Ehlers holds the power. With multiple suitors and a strong market forming, he’s quickly becoming one of the most compelling free agents to watch this summer.
