Connor Hellebuyck has officially won his first ever Hart Memorial Trophy, and the Vezina Trophy, marking his second straight and third Vezina Trophy of his career.
The Vezina Trophy is awarded annually to the goaltender adjudged to be the best at his position, as voted by the general managers of all NHL clubs.
The Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the player judged to be the most valuable to his team in the NHL during the regular season. The winner is selected by the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) through a vote at the end of the regular season.
Coming into the season with a fresh seven-year extension, Hellebuyck had expectations sky-high — and he didn’t just meet them, he shattered them. The 2024–25 campaign turned out to be one of the most dominant regular seasons of his career. But when the playoffs hit, things unraveled fast, and familiar concerns resurfaced.

A historic regular season

Hellebuyck was elite from opening night to the season finale. He finished with a 47–12–3 record across 62 starts, leading the league in:
  • Wins (47)
  • Goals-against average (2.00)
  • Shutouts (8)
His .925 save percentage ranked second in the NHL and underscored just how reliable he was night after night.
In January, he became the third-fastest goalie in NHL history to reach 300 career wins, adding another milestone to an already impressive résumé.
His 2024–25 season also earned him:
  • A Vezina Trophy finalist nod (which he ultimately won)
  • The William M. Jennings Trophy (fewest team goals allowed)
  • A Hart Trophy finalist spot for league MVP (which he also won)
Simply put, Hellebuyck wasn’t just good — he was the backbone of a Jets team that battled at the top of the Western Conference all year long.

Playoff woes return

Unfortunately for Hellebuyck and the Jets, the regular-season success didn’t carry into the postseason. They ended up in a dog fight with the St. Louis Blues, a series the Jets luckily won in seven games.
Hellebuyck gave up 15 goals in the first four games and finished with a .817 save percentage — the worst among all playoff starters. In just two starts, he allowed 11 goals on 43 shots, good for a staggering .744 SV%.
This wasn’t just a one-time slip. Since 2021, Hellebuyck’s playoff numbers have taken a steady dip. This year, he looked caught in between — over-adjusting, maybe even second-guessing himself. Opponents clogged the crease, screened him heavily, and threw him off his rhythm.
Hellebuyck’s third Vezina Trophy is a testament to just how dominant he’s been in the regular season, especially over the past two years. He remains the backbone of the Jets and one of the NHL’s elite goaltenders. But as Winnipeg looks to take the next step, the focus will shift to whether that regular-season brilliance can finally carry over into the playoffs.
