The Winnipeg Jets faced the Montreal Canadiens Wednesday night at Bell Centre, looking to end their five-game road trip on a high note after being blown out by the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.
Mark Scheifele, who was booed throughout the night by the Montreal crowd due to his hit on Jake Evans five seasons ago, opened the scoring late in the first period. Kyle Connor fed No. 55 a cheeky little backhand pass into the slot, and he ripped it past Jakub Dobes’ glove for his 14th of the season.
Winnipeg carried that lead into the first intermission. Montreal answered back near the 30-minute mark on the power play. Nick Suzuki, along the wall, sent the puck down low to Cole Caufield, who quickly sauced it to Juraj Slafkovsky at the bottom of the right circle. He beat Eric Comrie for his ninth of the year.
Not long after, the Jets’ top line had the Canadiens hemmed in their own end, and the pressure finally paid off. Gabriel Vilardi, parked behind the net, slid the puck out toward the left faceoff dot, where Connor hammered it off the post and in for his 14th.
Montreal wasn’t interested in heading into the second intermission down a goal, and they tied the game at 14:03 of the period. Alexandre Texier rimmed the puck around the boards, and Josh Morrissey went to collect it in the right corner. Ivan Demidov beat him to it and centered a pass to Oliver Kapanen in the slot, and the Swede buried it past Comrie.
The third period saw no goals but plenty of prime chances for Montreal to take the lead, sending the game to overtime. Both teams generated many odd-man rushes, along with several broken sticks, but just like in the third, both goalies shut the door.
In the shootout, Montreal scored on their first attempt courtesy of Cole Caufield, and that stood as the lone goal, giving the Canadiens two points while Winnipeg settled for one. Comrie was outstanding for the Jets, making 29 saves, many of them on high-danger opportunities.
“I mean, we got a pretty skilled team, and they got a pretty skilled team, so you’re gonna expect some chances both ways,” said Comrie about the back-and-forth overtime. “And hats off to their guy. Their guy was awesome as well. I mean, if I was a fun goalie duel in overtime there a lot of fun battling back and forth with Dobes there. It was a lot of fun.”
Winnipeg now returns home for a rematch with the Buffalo Sabres at Canada Life Centre on Friday. Puck drop is at 6:00 p.m. CST on TSN3.
