Eric Comrie made 33 saves, Tanner Pearson collected two points, and Jonathan Toews dominated in the faceoff circle as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the New York Islanders 5–2 on Thanksgiving Monday.
After a sleepy opening few minutes, Winnipeg opened the scoring 7:35 into the first period. Cole Koepke sprung Morgan Barron on a breakaway, and Barron roofed a backhander over Ilya Sorokin’s shoulder to make it 1–0.
Nino Niederreiter doubled the Jets’ lead on the power play. Gustav Nyquist threaded a pass through the crease to Niederreiter, who tapped it home. Jonathan Toews earned his first point as a Jet with the secondary assist.
Give him fuel and he's got FIRE 🔥
The two-goal advantage carried into the second period before Jean-Gabriel Pageau cut the deficit in half on a fortunate bounce that beat Comrie. But just 14 seconds later, Logan Stanley jumped into the rush and slipped a wrist shot past Sorokin to restore Winnipeg’s two-goal cushion.
STAN IS THE MAN 🫡
Later in the frame, Tanner Pearson extended the lead to 4–1 with his first goal as a Jet. Niederreiter broke in alone but couldn’t get a clean shot away, drawing Sorokin out of position before sliding the puck across for Pearson to tap in.
Getting CREATIVE out here 😮💨
The Islanders answered again when Emil Heineman blasted one past Comrie to make it 4–2, but that was as close as they’d get. Comrie stood tall in the third period, and Mark Scheifele sealed the win with an empty-netter.
The Jets started slow but found their rhythm as the game went on. Despite taking too many penalties, their penalty kill, and Comrie, held strong. Toews was outstanding in the dot, winning 75% of his faceoffs.
Cole Koepke left the game with a lower-body injury and did not return. An update on his status is expected soon.
The Jets are back in action on Thursday when they face the Philadelphia Flyers in Philadelphia. Puck drop is set for 6:00 p.m. CDT on TSN3.
