The Winnipeg Jets have thrived on not letting a bad game linger and they’re catching an opponent that’s struggled in both back-to-backs and while facing long odds.
The Jets are the -190 favourite with the Chicago Blackhawks coming back at +160 with a 6.5-goal total on the NHL odds for Thursday at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. Winnipeg is 7-1 in the last eight editions of this matchup with the total finishing OVER six times at sports betting sites.
The Blackhawks, who lost 4-1 against the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, are 7-13 in their last 20 games when they were playing for the second day in a row and are also 2-6 in their last eight away games as an underdog of +150 to +200 on the moneyline.
Blackhawks at Jets | OddsShark Matchup Report
The Blackhawks are 13-16-6 this season, which includes a 1-4 record in their last five away games against Central Division counterparts. Puck possession has been problematic for the Blackhawks, who despite the talents of right wing Patrick Kane and others, are 27th in the 31-team NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (47.5 percent). Chicago is 22nd in goals scored (2.69) and 20th in goals against (3.14). On special teams, the Blackhawks have a 24th-ranked power play (16.1 percent) and rank 17th at penalty killing (80.0).
Corey Crawford started for Chicago on Wednesday, which means the goaltending start should go to Robin Lehner, who is 7-6-4 this season with a 2.87 goals-against average and .924 save percentage.
The Jets are 20-12-2 thanks to having lost two straight games only once so far this season, a distinction that is at risk after Tuesday’s 7-3 home loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. Center Mark Scheifele is on a seven-game point streak as he spearheads an offense that is responsible for the Jets being 22nd in the NHL in five-on-five shot-attempt percentage (48.9 percent). Winnipeg is more efficient at each end of the rink, ranking 17th in goals scored (3.00) and 11th goals against (2.82). It’s a case of nowhere to go but up with one special-teams unit, as while their power play ranks 17th (18.2 per cent), the penalty killing unit has fallen to 30th place (73.4).
Backup goalie Laurent Brossoit, 4-3-0 with a 3.23 goals-against average and .890 save percentage, might be in line for a start after Connor Hellebuyck got the “mercy pull” against Carolina. The Jets are 3-1 in Brossoit’s last four starts.
The Jets visit the Minnesota Wild on Saturday and host the Montreal Canadiens on Monday before taking a three-day holiday break.
