The Winnipeg Jets faced the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, where Jonathan Toews made his long-awaited preseason debut with his hometown team. Despite the excitement, Winnipeg fell 3–2 in regulation, dropping to 0–2 on the preseason. Colin Miller and Colby Barlow scored for the Jets, while goaltender Eric Comrie played the full game, stopping 14 of 17 shots.
Toews was good in the dot, winning 55% of his faceoffs, and he made a strong defensive play on an Oilers breakaway by using his stick to break up the chance.
Outside of Toews’ return to game action, Barlow and Brad Lambert stole the show.
Barlow, drafted 18th overall in 2018, looked like a different player compared to last year. After telling reporters he arrived at camp leaner and quicker, he backed it up on the ice. Playing alongside Parker Ford and Lambert, Barlow created multiple scoring chances and showcased strong chemistry with his linemates. He capped off his night by scoring with 1:01 left in the third period and led the Jets with five shots on goal.
“Yeah, if you get all those chances, you obviously want to see one go in,” said Barlow. “But they all started from a great place, from Lambo and Fordo and the d-men just advancing pucks and recovering pucks in the ozone.”
Lambert also impressed after a quiet showing against the Minnesota Wild on Sunday. The 21-year-old winger bounced back with a confident performance, recording two assists while playing on Barlow’s line.
The Jets now head west for a rematch with Edmonton on Friday. Puck drop is at 8:00 p.m. CDT on TSN3.
