After three seasons in the Winnipeg Jets organization, forward Axel Jonsson-Fjällby is heading back home. The 27-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Brynäs IF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), marking a fresh start and a return to familiar ice.
Jonsson-Fjällby joined the Jets organization during the 2022–23 season after being claimed off waivers from the Washington Capitals. He played 76 NHL games over his time with Winnipeg, scoring eight goals and adding 11 assists for 19 points. While he had flashes of speed and energy in the big leagues, he spent most of his time with the Manitoba Moose in the AHL. In 110 games with the Moose, he recorded 27 goals and 61 points — providing consistent offensive depth and becoming a reliable presence on the wing.
Before joining the Jets, the Swedish winger was drafted in the fifth round (147th overall) by the Capitals back in 2016. He only played 23 games with Washington and spent most of his early pro career in Hershey with their AHL affiliate.
Now, Jonsson-Fjällby returns to the SHL, where he already has 102 games under his belt from his previous time with Djurgårdens IF. He posted eight goals and 27 points in Sweden’s top league before coming over to North America. This time around, he’ll be suiting up for Brynäs IF, a club with big ambitions after earning promotion back to the SHL.
He joins a loaded roster featuring former NHLers and prospects alike, including Erik Källgren (Maple Leafs), Oskar Lindblom (Flyers), Jakob Silfverberg (Ducks), and top prospects like Victor Söderström and Lucas Pettersson.
For Jonsson-Fjällby, this move is about opportunity. After years of bouncing between the NHL and AHL, he’ll finally get a chance to take on a bigger role and be a difference-maker on a pro team — something he’s been chasing his entire career.
