Day 2 of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft concluded earlier today. The event was full of exciting picks, trades and celebrity appearances, but I think we can all agree that next year the draft needs to go back to its traditional style. Round 1 of the draft took 4 1/2 hours, and today rounds 2-7 took a bit longer, around 5 hours. The Jets did not have a draft pick in round 2 and 4 today, but they did have picks in the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th round. Most of the picks in the draft after round 2 are unpredictable, so today was a good chance for the Jets to add some prospects to their ever changing prospect pool. Today the Jets selected 3 forwards and 1 defence, and here’s your newest members of the Winnipeg Jets.
Round 3, 92nd Overall: Owen Martin (C)
The Jets opened day 2 of the 2025 NHL draft by selecting a player who was born and raised in Manitoba. Owen Martin was someone who had a bit of range in his draft rankings, with most projecting him to go late in the 3rd round or early in the 4th round. The Oakbank, Manitoba native is a right handed centre who is 6’0″ and 185 pounds. Martin has spent his junior career playing for the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. This season, in 39 games, Martin scored 13 goals and added 21 assists for 34 points. Martin is eligible to return to the WHL next season, but he will be present at the Jets upcoming prospects camp. Jets director of amateur scouting Mark Hillier calls Martin an “intriguing player” who has good skating and an intelligent two-way game.
Round 5, 156th Overall: Viktor Klingsell (LW)
After congratulating Owen Martin, the Jets watched round 4 unfold before making their next selection towards the end of round 5. Viktor Klingsell being selected at this point in the draft was definitely seen as a “steal”, as his draft rankings projected him to be drafted in the early to mid 3rd round. The Swedish forward is a left handed winger who is 5’10” and 188 pounds. Klingsell has spent his junior career in Sweden playing for Skelleftea AIK Jr. of the J20 SHL league. This season, in 43 games, Klingsell scored 17 goals and added 22 assists for 39 points. Klingsell is likely to remain in the SHL next season, and it may be a few more seasons before he joins the Manitoba Moose. Scouts describe Klingsell as a player who has a really good feel for the game, and he’s the type of player who can effortlessly create scoring chances with his playmaking abilities.
Round 6, 188th Overall: Edison Engle (D)
The Jets patiently waited until their turn to be back on the clock towards the end of round 6. Having selected a defence in round 1 yesterday, the Jets decided to add another defence to their prospect pool with Edison Engle, who was projected to be selected around the 5th round on average. The American defender is a left handed defence who is 6’2″ and 175 pounds. Engle has spent his junior career in USA playing in a league that has been growing in popularity recently, the USHL. This season, Engle split his time between the Des Moines Buccaneers (20 GP, 0 G, 4 A, 4 PTS) and the Dubuque Fighting Saints, where he played 34 games and scored 2 goals added 11 assists for 13 points. Engle is committed to playing the 2025-26 season in the OHL with the Brantford Bulldogs, before joining the NCAA in 2026-27 with Ohio State. Scouts describe Engle as a smooth skating defender who is mobile on transitions and can be seen always looking ahead to the next play.
Round 7, 220th Overall: Jacob Cloutier (RW)
With one of the final picks in the 2025 NHL draft, the Jets went back on the clock to select another forward. Jacob Cloutier wasn’t ranked by some scouts in the draft rankings, but others had him being picked anywhere between the 5th and 7th round. The Canadian forward is a right handed right winger who is 5’10” and 171 pounds. Cloutier has spent his junior career in Canada playing with the Saginaw Spirit. In his 1st full season in the OHL (with the Spirit), Cloutier scored 23 goals and added 24 assists for 47 points in 67 games. Cloutier will likely play next season again with the Spirit, a team who is among the elite in an always fun to watch Ontario Hockey League. Scouts describe Cloutier as someone who plays a quick and intense game, and he’s someone who uses his energy to help create scoring chances whether its off the rush or cycling in the offensive zone.
The 2025 NHL draft is now complete, and now the Jets will have a few days to prepare before the next big day in the NHL off-season: July 1st. That day marks the 1st day for “free agency” to begin, when teams can sign unrestricted free agents and bring in new talent to improve their roster for the 2025-26 season.
