After a less than ideal 8-5 preseason loss against the Wild on Friday night, the Jets were back on the ice Sunday morning to continue training camp. The Jets showed some fight in the 3rd period, after being down 8-2 after 2 following a 7 goal 2nd period by the Wild. Connor Hellebuyck allowed 8 goals on 29 shots before being replaced by Thomas Milic. No need to panic though just yet, as it is just the preseason, and the Jets were only using about half of their NHL regulars in this one.
The Jets final 2 preseason games will be against the Calgary Flames. Wednesday night will be in Winnipeg at 7 pm CT, followed by a Friday night game in Calgary at 8 pm CT. It’s now only 10 days until the Jets open their regular season in Edmonton, but before that the team needs to make some more roster cuts to determine their opening night 23 man roster.
The 1st set of roster cuts happened back on Tuesday afternoon, as the roster went from 53 players at training camp down to 41. Early on Sunday morning, the Jets cut that number down to 36 players. The following 5 players have been cut from camp: Dominic DiVincentiis, Brayden Yager, Colby Barlow, Daniel Torgersson, and Parker Ford.
The Jets AHL affilliate, the Manitoba Moose, began their training camp with some off-ice testing on Sunday morning. DiVincentiis, Torgersson and Ford will be headed to Manitoba to join the Moose for their training camp as they prepare for their season.
Newly acquired Brayden Yager will be headed back to the Moose Jaw Warriors of the WHL to play his final season of junior hockey. The same applies for Colby Barlow, who will be going down to the juniors to play in the OHL with the Owen Sound Attack. Both players had overall solid training camps, and they now have a chance to play a final year of junior hockey before potentially joining the Manitoba Moose towards the end of their season.
The 36 players left at Jets training camp include the injured defencemen Ville Heinola and Logan Stanley. Their injuries, which will leave them both out well past opening night on October 9th, opens up a spot on the left hand side for a either a depth defenceman or a young defenceman to win a roster spot.
Although some members of the media thought more cuts would happen later Sunday afternoon, head coach Scott Arniel confirmed that their will be no further cuts today or tomorrow. More roster cuts are expected following one, or both of the Jets final preseason games. There will then likely be 1 final set of roster cuts, in order to get the team down to the maximum roster size of 23 players for opening night.
