Throwback Thursday: This week in 1989, Winnipeg Jets hire Bob Murdoch as head coach

Welcome back to another edition of Throwback Thursday!

This week in 1989 (May 25), the Winnipeg Jets hired Bob Murdoch as the ninth coach in the franchise’s history.

His time, however, was short lasting only two seasons in Winnipeg. Murdoch posted a 63-75-22 record and a meagre .463 points percentage.

His first year was rather successful with the Jets posting a 37-32-11 record that saw the club post a .531 points percentage. Making the playoffs, Winnipeg faced the eventual cup winning Edmonton Oilers, who dispatched the Jets in seven games.

Murdoch was preceded by Rick Bowness, who had only been behind the bench for two years. After Murdoch was let go in 1991, John Paddock was hired and spent four years coaching the Jets.
